BRAIN REGIONS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS
Certain parts of the brain govern specific
functions Example cerebellum
coordination Hippocampus memory
uu Neurons (nerve cells) basic unit of
communication in the brain uu Neurotransmission
information relayed from one area to another
areas 4 Via electrical impulses 4 Through
complex circuits 4 Using neurotransmitters
(NT)

THE REWARD PATHWAY
FUNCTION --- provides a reward and associated
pleasurable feeling for performing
activities that keep us alive
MADE OF network of neurons in
Ventral tegmental area VTA
Nucleus accumbens NA
Prefrontal cortex
HOW IT WORKS
Rewarding stimulus g
Brain reward circuit g Effect
(pleasure)
(neurotransmission)
  • Rewarding Stimulus

natural food, water, sex
non-natural (addictive agent) drugs,
non-drugs
(even greater feelings of pleasure than natural
stimulus)
NT (neurotransmitter) - Dopamine

THE REWARD PATHWAY
NORMAL COMMUNICATION PROCESS BETWEEN NEURONS
Dopamine (DA) -- released by neuron into a
synapse (the gap between neurons)
-- binds to a receptor (RDA) on the neighboring
neurons
-- information (signal) -- released to that
neuron.
-- DA transported back by DA transporter

Cocaine --- block DA transporter --- continuous
stimulation of the receiving neuron --- euphoric

D R U G S
Disruption of many brain functions
Damage the brain structure (decrease the size of
neurons)
Entering blood stream
Damage body organs and systems
PLEASURE
PHYSICAL DISORDERS
But bypassing surviving activities
MENTAL DISORDERS
SOCIAL DISORDERS
SPIRITUAL DISORDERS
DEATH

is closely linked with virtually every negative
aspect of society
suicide, violent crime, birth defects,
industrial accidents, domestic sexual abuse,
disease, homelessness and death
It is the number 1 drug problem for people from
all walks of life
It knows no racial, ethnic, social or economic
barriers

HOW
AFFECTS YOUR BODY
A L C O H O L
NERVOUS SYSTEM
Irreparable damage to nerve cells (Some die,
other are altered)
  • BRAIN DISORDERS -- Alcohol induced dementia
    (Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome) Cerebella
    atrophy
  • PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY

CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM
Increased risk of hypertension, stroke,
cardiomiopathy, heart arrhythmias, congestive
heart failure
LUNGS
Depresses respiratory functions

HOW
AFFECTS YOUR BODY
A L C O H O L
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
Gastric or duodenal ulcer, esophageal varices,
pancreatitis, gastric cancer Liver because the
liver must filter alcohol from the blood, the
alcohol affects it more than any other organ of
your body.
  • excess calories in the alcohol are stored as fat
    in the liver
  • functioning liver cells die from alcoholic
    poisoning
  • scar tissue replaces dead cells, causing
    cirrhosis

REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
MEN - damages cells in the testes, causing
impotence, sterility, possibly enlarged breasts
WOMEN irregular menstrual cycles,
malfunctioning of the ovaries, birth defects in
infants, fetal alcoholic syndrome (mental
retardation)

HOW
AFFECTS YOUR BODY
A L C O H O L
YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM
Alcohol weakens the bodys defense against
infection and breast cancer
GENERAL METABOLISM
Vitamins deficiencies, Pernicious anemia,
diabetes mellitus type II, hyperlipidemia,
atherosclerosis

A L C O H O L
The WORLD - most abused drug for all the ages
USA (alarming statistics for teenagers)
of all 12-17 years old 37 currently use
alcohol.
5 millions American teens have serious problems
from alcohol use.

AND NUTRITION
ALCOHOL highly refined product but low in
nutrients EMPTY CALORIES
For MEN alcohol accounts for 9 of the calories
in the American Diet (Men overfed but
undernourished)
Young people who grew up in non-alcoholic homes
are less likely to have problems with alcohol
when they reach adulthood. A parents example can
make a big difference.

THE DEADLIEST DRUG IN THE WORLD
TOBACCO
  • Produces the strongest addiction
  • The withdrawal symptoms are terrible
    (irritability, depressed mood, heart rate,
    increased appetite, insomnia, anxiety)

NICOTINE
NICOTINE CARBON MONOXIDE (CO)
  • Produce cardiovascular diseases
  • decrease the ability of red blood cells to carry
    oxygen respiratory disease

CARCINOGENIC AGENTS
  • ..
  • EVERY CIGARETTE SMOKED, TAKES 13 MIN OF THE
    PERSONS LIFE SPAN
  • IN THE USA IT KILLS ALMOST A HALF OF MILLION
    PEOPLE PER YEAR
  • THE BIGGEST FAVOR PEOPLE CAN DO FOR THEMSELVES
IT TO STOP THE SMOKING HABIT

CAFFEINE
Caffeine is not some energy form that excites our
nervous system, it simply thwarts one of the main
process by which the nervous system is generally
kept calm.
Caffeine k Acetylcholine, k Dopamine
concentration in the brain. Caffeine m the
concentration of Adenosine in the brain.
Adenosine - brake pedals The harder the cell
works, the more Adenosine is produced. After the
brain in fully active, adenosine works to
gradually quiet the brain back down.
Caffeine Similar structure, but its a smaller
size then adenosine. It binds to Adenosine
receptor and blocks it. Adenosine cant do its
job.

The effects on
The nervous system
k Stimulation of the brain Insomnia, Irritability
and nervousness. Chronic fatigue. m Intellectual
performances. m Motor coordination. Aggravation
of anxiety disorders and panic attacks.
The Heart and Blood vessels
Arrhythmia ( Irregular heart beat) Coronary
artery disease (Myocardial infarction, and angina
pectoris) Hypertension Vasoconstriction of the
brains arteries

CAFFEINE
The effects on
The digestive system
Gastro-esophageal reflux (GERD) k Gastric acid
secretions ( Peptic ulcers disease) Gastric,
pancreatic, colon carcinoma
The Reno-urinary system
Irritating effect on the kidneys (diuretic
effect) Bladder Carcinoma k Urinary calcium and
magnesium loss (osteoporosis) In Coca Cola
Caffeine plus phosphoric acid - blocks calcium
absorption.

CAFFEINE
The effects on
The General metabolism
  • k Basal metabolic rate (5-25)
  • k Homocysteine k Atherogenic effect (k
    atherosclerosis)
  • k Blood glucose k Insulin resistance
    Diabetogenic effect.
  • k Blood fats (Triglycerides Cholesterol) k
    ASC effect.
  • m Iron Absorption ( 50) Tanin compounds (in
    tea) g Anemia.
  • Interferes with DNA repair process g Congenital
    defects
  • g Carcinogenic effects.
  • Crosses the placental barrier g Abortion, fetal
    distress, fetal growth impaired
  • Secreted in the breast milk g effect on the
    babys heart rate.

He who will observe simplicity in all his
habits, restricting the appetite and controlling
the passions, may preserve his mental powers
strong, active, and vigorous, quick to perceive
everything which demands thought or action, keen
to discriminate between the holy and the unholy
and ready to engage in every enterprise for the
