Resume Essentials credited to Joe Turner
, the author of "Job Search Secrets
Unlocked" Capture readers attention Drop the
long-winded paragraphs filled with "results
oriented" and "proven track record" clichés.
Create a short personal brand statement that
clearly summarizes who you are, your biggest
strength and the primary benefit you bring to an
employer.Prove itWhen you sell skills, you've
reduced yourself to a commodity, and commodities
always sell for the lowest price. Sell results
by speaking the employers' language, which is
"return on investment" or ROI. Make it
MeasurableList specific, measurable results
citing evidence examples of problems that you've
solved.Don't tell too muchLongwinded, off
focus, confusing - These are called "screenouts."
Your résumé's sole purpose is to get the reader
to pick up the phone to call you. If the résumé
doesn't clearly explain why you're the best fit
for the particular role, it doesn't belong there.
12
  • Interview Preparation
  • Who are you meeting - Ask your recruiter in
advance with whom you will be meeting, their
position(s) and how long you should plan on being
    there.
  • Arrive Early - Plan to arrive a few minutes
early a late arrival for a job interview is
inexcusable, so make sure you have detailed
    directions before you leave.
  •
  • Show your enthusiasm. Clients look for people
who love what they do, and who are excited at the
    prospect of a new project.
  • Be assertive, not aggressive. Come across as
someone who is enthusiastic and confident, but
    not a know it all.
  •
  • Be prepared to answer specific questions, like
  • What's the accomplishment of which you are most
    proud (keep it relevant)
  • Your worst career mistake (and how did you
    handle the situation)
  • Where do you see yourself in 2/5/10 years
  • Be ready to discuss your strengths and
    weaknesses (we all have them)
  • Tell the manager why he should hire you instead
    of someone else.

13
  • Focus on the Positives, but be conscious of the
    Negatives
  • Less than professional personal appearance (A
suit and tie is most appropriate for most
    interviews)
  • Arrogant or condescending behavior
  • Lack of interest and enthusiasm
  • Lack of confidence and poise nervousness
  • Rudeness lack of courtesy
  • Criticism of past employers, managers, projects
    or technologies
  • Inability to sustain a conversation
  • Talking too much and not listening where
    appropriate interrupting
  • Lack of commitment to fill the position at hand
