Library RFID and AFI

2
Agenda
  • Introduction
  • Library Perspective on Systems
  • Industry Adoption of ISO 15693-3
  • Security Implementations
  • Current Status
  • The AFI Issue
  • Looking Forward

3
Introduction
  • Public and Academic Libraries
  • Barcode-based systems
  • Integrated Library Systems starting in 1980s
  • EM and RF Security Systems from 1970
  • Self Checkout Systems from 1993
  • RFID Intro to Libraries in 1999
  • Replace barcode and security with RFID
  • Proprietary Systems
  • Tags from Philips, TI, Mitsubishi Materials,
    Tagsys (ISD/Gemplus)

4
Library Perspective
  • Proprietary systems are usually more expensive to
    purchase and maintain
  • Vendors may not remain viable in the long term
    (need for interoperability)
  • Library items will survive for many years in some
    cases
  • Standardization can help provide
    equipment/vendor/tag interoperability
  • Security is mission-critical for many libraries

5
ISO 15693-3 / 18000-3 Mode 1
  • ISO Tags sold by most library RFID vendors (3M,
    Bibliotheca, Tech Logic, Tagsys, Libramation,
    Omron, ST Logitrack, Intellident, others)
  • Many library RFID RFPs specify these tags
  • Provides standard tag platform. Next step is
    standardizing contents of tag
  • Basis for Dutch NBD standard and Danish draft
    standard

6
Security Implementations
  • Electromagnetic Strips
  • RFID security by proprietary EAS function (ISO
    and non-standard)
  • RFID security by AFI
  • Detection system issues inventory command with
    AFI specified
  • One AFI assigned to items checked in, another to
    items checked out
  • Allows other applications to search for items
    that are checked out

7
Current Status
  • Several hundred libraries using ISO tags. Many
    are using AFI.
  • Danish standard first effort to standardize
library industry on particular AFI values
  • EDItEUR has applied for one AFI code for the
    global library industry

8
The Issue
  • Not all ISO silicon offers EAS
  • EAS implementations proprietary
  • Industry demands interoperability
  • The majority of ISO tags support AFI
  • AFI provides a way to effectively implement
    security with interoperability
  • Application interference is undesirable

9
Looking Forward
  • Options
  • Continued, but standardized, use of AFI for
    security
  • Two assigned codes would be desirable
  • Is there another way to provide security based on
    ISO standard functions?
