Title: ECOVISION

1
ECO-VISION
  • Change Can Happen

2
Eco-Vision
  • Our Mission The purpose of Eco-Vision is to
lower the impact of our schools carbon footprint
by making a more ecologically friendly
    environment.
  • Ultimately we hope our actions will not only
effect but inspire our community to eventually
    follow suit.

3
Long-Term Goal
  • To use alternative measures to
  • produce energy through the
  • installation of solar power at
  • our school.
  • Our present objective is to connect solar panels
    to the schools power grid.
  • We will do this by using grid-tie panels, which
are solar panels that can be connected directly
into the schools power grid. This means that,
should the energy consumption exceed the output
of the solar panels, the energy from the grid
    will compensate.

4
Cochrane High School Sustainable Development
Project
  • Accomplishments
  • In June 2000, two Cochrane High School science
teachers developed the idea of teaching
sustainable development with a hands on approach
  • A group of 15 interested students was organized
to raise both awareness and funds
  • Within five months, 45,560 was raised
  • On July 30, 2004, thirty solar panels were
installed on the roof of the south end of the
    school
  • On October 20, 2004, one wind turbine was
    connected
  • December 2007, 10 more solar panels were
installed to power the LED score board of the gym

5
Solar Panels
  • In Cochrane there are 30 solar panels anchored to
the roof using cement blocks and steel beams.
Together their output is about 3.1kW.
  • The 10 solar panels that were recently installed
have a total output of 1.5kW. These were bolted
to the side of the school.
  • They have a 25 year life span
  • How they connect into the schools system
  • Solar Panels- inverters- batteries- directly into
    schools wiring system
  • No extra wiring for around the
  • school is necessary
  • Batteries store energy for cloudy days

6
Solar Panel Maintenance
  • Can withstand 50km/h winds
  • Has a silicone protective cover
  • A built in heating coil melts snow that could
    potentially block sunlight
  • Snow does not collect on them because of the
angle at which they are mounted
  • They must have a disconnect power switch to turn
    off the panels during maintenance.

Potential solar panel companies
  • Soltek Powersource

  • Sedmek
  • (403) 398-0881 contact David Kelly
  • 514, 3208 8th Ave. NE Calgary, AB.

8
What will it cost?
  • This is what it cost the Cochrane school. Ours
should be roughly the same cost.
  • 30 large Solarex SX120 modules
    18 450.00
  • Rest of kit (eg. 2500W Grid-tie inverter)
    9 918.67
  • GST
    1 985.81
  • Grand Total
    30 354.48

9
How much would we actually save?
  • Unable to get maintenance to release such data,
we once again are just ball parking using
    Cochranes information.
  • They save 150/month and are reducing their
carbon dioxide emissions by 200 kg/month.
  • Lets put that into perspective
  • 150.00 a month by the ten months we are in
    school is 1500.00
  • 1500.00 by the twenty five year life span is 37
    500.00
  • If the grand total is just over 30 000, then we
are actually saving 7 500 that can be used
elsewhere, and this is if we pay for it all by
ourselves. If approved, there are numerous
grants that will cover almost all of the cost.
  • We would also save 46 875 kg of carbon dioxide
from being released into the atmosphere. Thats
the same as 103 125 lbs.

10
How we will raise this money
  • Fundraising
  • Canvassing
  • Hosting an open house to
  • present the project to the
  • community
  • Applying for grants
  • Some examples
  • -A for Energy (10 000)
  • -Conoco Phillips Community
  • Investment (1000)
  • -Top School Fundraisers (5 000)

11
Outcomes
  • These panels will put Lacombe Composite High
School on the map as a leader in alternative
    energy.
  • Cochrane High School has received many awards of
recognition from the Alberta government, the
Federal government, and have had many speakers,
such as David Suzuki, come to congratulate them.
  • Ultimately this will inspire, not only our
community, but other schools across Canada to
    follow suit.

12
The Installation
Holes are drilled and steel beams are inserted
13
The support beams are angled 45o so that snow and
debris will easily slide off of the cells
14
The solar panels can be easily maneuvered
15
The initial panels and framework are assembled on
the ground
16
Initial panels and framework are fixed to top
bolts
17
All panels and framework are secured and have
simplistic wiring
18
