Citizen soldiers

• City-states depending on army of ordinary
  citizens called hoplites.
• Fought on foot and were heavily armed
• Shield, sword and spear
• Created protective wall with shields
• Took pride in fighting for their city-states
• Unfortunately caused city-states to not unite
