Title: Planning Degree Program

Planning Degree Program
What the Planning Degree Program Has Done For Me
"As my pappy always used to say - those who fail
to plan, plan to fail." - Larry
Hofreiter, graduated 2003
The University of Arizona
2
My experience with the Planning program has been
very positive. Ive enjoyed the opportunity to
work with some amazing faculty and some great
planning students. Their dedication and
professionalism set an example both motivating
and inspiring. - Ethan Stapp, graduated
2003
Prince Grade School Health Fair

The warm response of the director (and the
scholarship) got me interested to be a part of
the Planning Program. We go camping, hiking, play
frisbee, and enjoy Friday night parties! My
American friends never let their friend from
India feel homesick - Rahul
Srivastava, 2004
The great thing about each of our experiences
here in the Planning Program is that our
education isn't just theoretical, but actually
involvesgiving back to the community." -
Robyn Welch, 2004
The great thing about Planning is getting to
workwith people who are dedicated to making a
positive contribution. - Nancy Favour, 2003

Scrivastava, Robyn Welch.

Personally, I can think of no other profession
that strives to improve peoples quality-of-life
in the same comprehensive manner as planning. As
we enter the 21st Century, local government will
increasingly rely on planners to resolve issues
of equity, efficiency, environmental protection,
and economic development. - Larry Hofreiter,
2003
This program has given me more than an academic
education. It has provided me an opportunity to
learn more about myself and introduced me to
people I will never forget. - Megan Johnson,
2003
Homecoming 2002

The need for planning is evident in our
expanding population, border situation, and
environmental issues.
Trained planners are needed to help the State
grow wisely and well, while at the same time
protect our natural resources.Over the past few
years, I have noticed how employers are
increasingly looking to the Planning Program for
qualified individuals to fill vacant positions.
I found my boyfriend at the School of Planning!
- Colleen Stoetzel, AICP 2000
Senior Planner, Cayman Islands

My coursework at the University of Arizona
Planning Program has given me the tools to think
as a planner and certainly prepared me for the
planning profession. Planning law and planning
administration were most helpful to me, and I
even have been known to use what I learned from
my history and theory classes!
As Co-Chair of Arizonas Growing Smarter
Oversight Council, my planning knowledge helps me
advance the concepts of growth management
established by the State Legislature into
building livable communities throughout Arizona.
Arlan Colton, AICP 1979 Planning Director
of Pima County.

I give special attention to hiring graduates
and interns from the U/A Planning Program because
I know they come prepared to work as planners.
The University and local governments enjoy a
special relationship because of the important
role that planning plays in this community.
The major educational institution of a rapidly
growing urbanized area of nearly one million
people should have a graduate planning
program. The community serves as a real life
training ground for the student planners, while
local governments as well as the development
community benefit. - Jim Mazzocco, AICP 1982
Senior Planner, City of Tucson.
8
The program provided me with a unique
understanding of local planning issues. The
coursework, particularly the required internship,
played a vital role in helping me get hired in a
local planning firm. - Ted Herman,
2002 Planner, City of Tucson
Students who come out of the U/A Planning
Program have a very short learning curve. The
program covers a wide range of topics and teaches
new approaches to problem-solving. The graduates
we hire help us respond to planning challenges in
new ways and have broadened the scope of our
firm. - Dick Walbert, AICP 1966
Principal, The Planning Center
9
What stands out most for me is the diversity of
employment opportunities that my classmates in
the School of Planning have found both in the
public as well as private sector GIS,
environmental resources, transportation, land
use, and infrastructure facilities development.
Recent graduates of the program have played a
significant role in the Arizona Planning
Association, creating greater visibility for the
University locally and across the State. Best of
all, I found my girlfriend at the School of
Planning! - Mark Schnaufer, AICP
1999 Manager, Planning Services, AMEC
10
My education at the U/A Planning Program was a
springboard into my career in land use planning
and development.
Tucson is on the edge of a significant growth
surge to the southeast where planning for these
large tracts of land is a high priority for the
Citys Strategic Plan. As we shift into new
types of urban development, Tucson needs a strong
accredited planning program to educate and train
planners for tomorrow. - Peter Gavin
1980 Zoning Examiner, City of Tucson
11
HAVING GROWN UP IN TUCSON AND RECEIVING MY
COLLEGE EDUCATION AT U OF A I FEEL STRONGLY THAT
IT IS IN THE BEST INTEREST OF THE COMMUNITY, THE
UNIVERSITY AND THE STATE TO CONTINUE EDUCATING
PLANNERS.  I BELIEVE THAT THE EDUCATION OF
PLANNERS SHOULD FOCUS MORE ON GENERAL PRINCIPLES
AND PRACTICE THAN ON WHATEVER'S HAPPENING NOW,
MUCH OF WHICH SEEMS TO FADE.
I SEE OPPORTUNITIES FOR A PLANNING EDUCATION TO
BE BOTH PROCESS- ORIENTED AND SPECIALIZED IN SUCH
FIELDS AS AREA AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, HEALTH
CARE AND INSTITUTIONAL FACILITIES,  REAL ESTATE
DEVELOPMENT. THESE ARE JUST SOME AREAS WHICH
COULD BENEFIT FROM ITS DISCIPLINE. - JOSEPH A.
LUSTECK, AICP, CRE - 1966

The Planning Program is a great asset for this
community graduates of the program shape the
form of cities and towns all around the country.
Its a privilege to be part of that wonderful
group of individuals. - Jesus Romero
2001 Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc.
13
Weve never been disappointed in anyone weve
hired from the U/A graduate Planning Program. It
has served us well. - Mike Grassinger, AICP
1978 Principal, The Planning Center
The University offers a unique program that
takes advantage of Tucsons proximity to the
United States-Mexican border by offering a
concentration in international/ borderlands
planning. Environmental issues including air,
land, and water quality are crucial topics for
planners in Southern Arizona to address. -
Linda Morales, AICP 1996 Principal, The
Planning Center

Tijuana, August 2001. Project Master plan for a
linear park in the floodplain along the Rio
Alamar, a tributary of the Rio Tijuana. The two
images are taken from a flood control berm, where
the Rio Alamar meets the Rio Tijuana in the
eastern section of the city of Tijuana. The
squatter side is in the 50-year federal
flood-plain. I was impressed by all the consumer
durables the residents had - cars, campers, TVs,
washing machines, bicycles in dwellings made from
pallets and industrial left-overs.
Turning around, I photographed directly opposite.
The 'safe' side of the berm is a residential area
with retail services nearby, south of the
maquiladora district. This contrast is common in
the eastern portion of Tijuana. The city plans to
relocate households in the floodplain even though
these settlements were growing daily when we
visited. - Laura Huntoon, Ph.D. Associate
Professor School of Planning
