2
Major ideas of the book
  • Base education in students culture
  • Become involved in students community
  • Become involved in students lives
  • Organic education
  • Key vocabulary
  • Inner vision versus outer vision

3
Meaning Significance of Major Ideas
  • Students learn best when they know and like what
    they are learning
  • Build rapport with students by caring about them
    and their community
  • Organic education differentiated instruction

4
continued
  • Use vocabulary words that have meaning to
    students
  • Let students use their inner vision to create
    their own pictures

5
Things the group agrees with
  • The discipline theory the author quotes
Discipline is a matter of being able to get
attention when you want it . She got the
childrens attention by playing the piano. This
method of discipline is still used today, but
many teachers use a rhythmic clap that the
children repeat back to the teacher

6
continued
  • Students learn better with their own culture and
    interests.
  • First vocabulary words that students learn should
have an intense meaning to them, interest wise
and culture wise this helps them remember the
words as humans remember things that have a
    significant meaning to them

7
Things we disagree with
  • Sylvia Ashton-Warner thought that she was a bad
    teacher
  • We disagree with this because she was so ahead of
her time. The things she talked about and methods
she used are just being introduced and used now,
    today.

8
Inner eye and outer eye
  • Children have two visions Inner and outer
  • The visions seen by the inner eye are organic
  • Illustrations and words chosen by adults are seen
    though the outer eye
  • Illustrations and words that come from within are
picked up by the inner eye

9
Organic Vocabulary opposed to Inorganic
VocabularyRespectable words wont do. Pleasant
words wont do.
  • Organic
  • Describes the words that come from the Childs
    being
  • Born from the dynamic life.
  • Word carries a personal illustration.
  • Organic learning is motivated by personal
    interest
  • Inorganic
  • If we impose words onto children it is not
    organic
  • Words that dont have intense meaning
  • Inorganic words are words handed to you
  • Lacking interest to the students inner eye

10
Progressive Style
  • Class is more students centered
  • students pursue their natural interests
  • Less focus on discipline
  • Students worked together in groups

11
Signs of effective teaching
