5
Mission Level Architecture
  • Data volume and data compression studies -
Structured noise from the detectors renders the
data poorly compressible with the current
    compression algorithm
  • Updated Science Operations - Design Reference
Mission for data volume analysis results
    justified requirement for 458 gbits/day
  • Participated in evaluation of possible solutions
  • Resolution has been achieved through an increased
    number of contacts
  • Studying a high compression software solution
that will be discussed in a splinter session at
    0900 on Friday (Ballroom)
  • Moment of Inertia - high inertia increases slew
    times and decreases efficiency
  • Participated in review of various slew algorithms
which use current momentum magnitude or state and
various approximations of RWA capacity to select
    or compute slew parameters
  • Ensured consideration of operations efficiency

JWST Operations Development
  • Work on JWST operational tools is in full swing
at STScI. The look and feel of JWST will be very
    similar to that of HST.
  • The Astronomers Proposal Tool (APT) will be used
for JWST Phase I and Phase II program submission.
MIRI and NIRCam templates were released with APT
in April for the user community to try! Download
    it at www.stsci.edu/hst/proposing/apt - Massmo
    Stiavelli
  • Additional tools will be available. For example,
as seen in the next slides Tom Donaldson
  • The NIRSpec planning tool for optimizing the
microshutter array using existing NIRCam or ACS
    images, for example.
  • Mosaic tool for defining mosaics

39
JWST Templates Released in APT
  • APT 17.4 released on 4/9/09 for HST support
  • Includes JWST proposal support with MIRI and
    NIRCam templates

NIRSpec Micro-shutter Array
Microshutters measure 0.2 by 0.4 arcsecs,
arranged on 4 grids. The array is configurable to
allow spectra of 100 distinct sources
simultaneously.
