• Peru is divided in 3 parts
• the coast (which is mostly desert)
• the mountains (where the climate ranges from mild
  to frigid)
• the jungle (which contains an amazing diversity
  of tropical plant and animal life)
• Getting from one place to another can be
  extremely difficult
• Second largest producer of silver in the world
• Seventh largest producer of copper

• Official language is Spanish
• Capital- Lima
• Major Cities- Callao,Arequipa, Trujillo
• Mario Vargas Llosa, world-renowned author
• Became the heroic leader of the neoliberal
  opposition to Alan Garcia in the late 1980s
• Lost in the 1990 presidential election, and was
  so disgusted that he went into self-imposed exile
  in Spain.

• A thriving theater and dance community centered
  in the "Bohemian" district of Barranco, on the
  southeast side of Lima
• Julie Freundt multi-talented performer and
  singer
• Gian Marco progressive rock musician
• Folk music and artistic tradition that blends
  criollo and indigenous elements
• Popular styles are salsa and merengue
• New chicha style is popular among lower class
• Susana Baca, the "diva" of Peru's African music
  scene, recently performed on tour in the United
  States

Judicial Branch

• Headed by the Supreme Court of the Republic
• has jurisdiction over the whole nation
• The second hierarchic level is made up of the
  Superior Courts
• have jurisdiction over an entire Judicial
  District
• more or less synonymous to the 25 Regions or
  Departments of Peru
• 28 Judicial Districts
• The third hierarchic level is formed by the
  Courts of First Instance (trial court)
• have jurisdiction over each province
• The fourth and lowest hierarchic level of the
  Peruvian Judicial Power, are the Courts of Peace
• only have jurisdiction over a single district

LEgislative Branch

• Congress
• consists of 120 members of congress
  (congresistas)
• Elected for five year periods
• proportional representation basis
• To be eligible, candidates must be Peruvian
  citizens, have passed their 25th birthday, and
  not have had their right to vote suspended
