3
Great Trainer/Assessor
  • Great practitioners, dont always make great
    business owners
  • Running an RTO is not different from other
    businesses.
  • If training and assessing is what you like doing,
take a job, dont open a training business
  • You will end up doing everything

    another poorly managed RTO?

    RTOs
  • Managing an RTO is a full time business there
will be no time for doing it
  • Systems and procedures are what make a business
    run well

5
How will you run the RTO?
  • A well run RTO business requires systematic
    policies and procedures
  • Compliance and good management go hand in hand
  • Clear and accurate procedures need to exist
  • Record keeping is the key
  • Poorly resourced RTOs fail what start up
capital and resources do you have?

6
Being an RTO is not a recipe to make money
  • As with all businesses, you require start up
capital, a business premises and the training and
    assessment resources
  • Return on investment in the first year will be
    minimal
  • Do not expect to make a profit in the first year.

7
Government funding
  • In Victoria
  • There is a current list of private providers
  • No funding will be offered to RTOs outside of
    this group
  • Registration as an RTO does not entitle you to
    government funding
  • The Victorian Minimum Performance Standards only
    allows subcontracting between preferred
    providers.

8
Being your own boss
  • If you are considering running a one person RTO
    think again.
  • If you are a one person operation you really just
have a job with very long hours
  • If you are going to employ trainers, you will
    become a boss
  • Do you have the leadership skills to do this?
