What is the March of Dimes

• The March of Dimes has a 65-year history of
  saving America's children. It was founded in 1938
  by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to defeat
  polio, a dreaded disease that claimed the lives
  and limbs of America's children in record
  numbers. Within 17 years, the Salk vaccine was
  developed and polio was defeated.
• With a track record of success in bringing
  people together to solve complex health
  challenges, the March of Dimes is uniquely
  qualified to take on the problem of
  prematurity.

Prematurity

• Every year more than 470,000 infants are born
  prematurely, and prematurity is on the rise.  It
  now affects one out of every eight babies born in
  the United States.

The March of Dimes Prematurity Campaign

• The March of Dimes Prematurity Campaign is a
  five-year, 75 million research, awareness and
  education campaign to help families have
  healthier babies. The Campaign includes
• Funding research to find the causes of premature
  birth.
• Educating families about the warning signs of
  premature labor and what can be done to prevent
  it.
• Expanding access to health care coverage so that
  more women can get prenatal care.
• Helping health care providers learn ways to help
  reduce the risk of early delivery.

• You can donate by ordering a virtual band in
  honor of someone you know who was born too soon,
  or in honor of one of the 1305 babies that will
  be born prematurely today

Join WalkAmerica

• Now in its 33rd year, WalkAmerica is the first
  and best-loved walking event in the nation. As
  the March of Dimes biggest fund-raiser,
  WalkAmerica supports lifesaving research and
  innovative programs that save babies from
  prematurity, birth defects and other health
  problems.  Since its beginning in 1970,
  WalkAmerica has raised more than 1 billion to
  help give babies a fighting chance.
• Walkers ask friends, family, business associates
  and others to sponsor them by making a donation
  to the March of Dimes. Others volunteer their
  time to register walkers, staff checkpoints and
  offer refreshments.

• Here's how you can get involved
• Help implement March of Dimes health education
  programs at local hospitals, schools, YWCAs and
  businesses.
• Recruit students from local schools for March of
  Dimes youth leadership programs
• Plan and implement fund-raising events, like
  WalkAmerica.
• Help your local chapter with office procedures
  such as typing, telephoning, organizing or
  preparing mailings
