Title: Integrating Technology Into

1
Integrating Technology Into
Science

Kimberly Reining-Gray
2
Where Do I Start?
  • Decide what is reasonable
  • Plan one assignment
  • Find people resources
  • Be patient

3
Some Beginning Examples
  • Use digital photos for a slide show
  • Use photos to enhance power point projects
  • Use computers for web quests
  • Assign posters/brochures/ booklets with internet
    and software components
  • Use online interactive activities

4
This is an example of student work using digital
photos and power point.
WHAT GREW
  • SAMPLES WERE TAKEN ON SWABS
  • THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT GREW
  • THIS SAMPLE IS FROM THE ROTC WATER FOUNTAIN

5
One use of technology is a slide show that
parents can see at PTO.
6
Still Low Tech, But More Involved
  • With the new NCLB requirements data collection is
imperative. We use the CPS to get student
    results and analyze their success.

7
Technology For The Brave
  • Data Collection Probes are almost a must. Vernier
    is our favorite.
  • Pick one activity or probe to work with to begin.
    Temperature is user friendly.
  • Add one probe at a time to your activities.

8
This slide was taken from a student presentation.
They used UV probes, digital photos and power
point to make a presentation.
Hypothesis
We think that Mrs. Reinings glasses will block
the most UV rays.
9
Probe Ware and Calculators
  • Collect data using probes and calculators (TI83)
  • Import the screen from the calculator to a
computer to use in a lab write-up or project.
  • Transfer to Logger Pro to analyze data

10
This is a student slide using their data to
support the analysis. It was part of a slide
presentation.
Data Graph
  • This chart shows the amount of UV rays not
blocked . As you can see, not using sunglasses
allows you to come into contact with 8165 UV
rays. Rashads glasses allowed 1386.51 UV rays to
pass through. Reinings glasses allowed 1116.91
    rays to pass through.

11
How Long Will It Take?
  • Integrating technology is not fast. Be patient.
  • As you become familiar with one activity, add
more technology or repeat what youve done and
    add something new.
  • It takes a few years to really use technology a
    lot.
  • You can be successful with an activity in one
    year.
  • Opposition from colleagues takes time to overcome.

12
How Do I Convince Others Of The Need For
Technology?
  • Be proactive. Send your photos and projects to
anyone and everyone. I have included the Board
    personnel, principals, other teachers and
    parents.
  • Get your kids excited. Enthusiasm spreads.
  • Track your students success.
  • Meet one-on-one or invite people to your class.

Isnt This Expensive?
  • Yes and no. Technology can be expensive, but you
    can be creative.
  • Apply for grants. Work in small groups and add
    equipment slowly.
  • Shop smart! Order equip. that is compatible.
  • Use the TI loan program.

14
Show Me The Money!
  • Use sources like NSTA and PTAs to find money.
  • Search online for grants and awards.
  • Talk to vendors to get the best deal.
  • Co-op with other schools to scaffold learning and
    cut expenses.
  • Ask a local University for help.

15
Do The Kids Really Learn More?
  • I have just begun to track data at my school, but
here is what I have found
  • Kids that use technology are excited about
science, on task more often and think more
    critically.
  • Our biology and physical science classes averaged
a passing grade on EOCTs across the department.
Techno-savvy classes had higher scores than
    others.

16
My Personal Experience
  • I have worked hard to get technology into my
classroom and my department. There is opposition
because equip. costs money. Many veteran
teachers are unwilling (at first) to try new
    technology.
  • With persistence I have my entire department
using technology and the kids excited about it.
We assign department projects so all kids
experience the opportunity to use technology.
Other kids want to be in classes with the cool
    stuff.
  • My intermediate students scored higher than other
classes on the EOCT and they were more confident
    in their ability to succeed.
