  • 1. Europeans wanted cheap labor for their sugar
    plantations.
  • 2. African kings in coastal areas of Africa
    gathered captives from inland kingdoms and traded
    them for European goods. Then the European
    traders shipped the slaves to the Americas.
  • 3. The Middle Passage was the middle leg of the
    triangular trade.
  • 4. Over time, Europeans came to associate slavery
    with black Africans. To many Europeans, dark skin
    color meant inferiority. This led to the belief
    that some people are inferior because of their
    race.

  • 1. The colonists were looking for greater
    economic opportunity and for escape from
    religious persecution.
  • 2. The colony at Roanoke and the Sagadahoc colony
    were the first two English colonies established
    in America.
  • 3. In 1601, the Virginia Company of London and
    the Virginia Company of Plymouth were
    established.
  • 4. The colonists faced sicknesses and a difficult
    climate. They also spent their time looking for
    gold rather than building homes and growing food.
  • 5. The Jamestown settlers continued to take over
    more and more Powhatan land to use for tobacco
    growing.
  • 6. Their demand that the governor of the colony
    approve a war against Native Americans was not
    met.

    the Pilgrims. They showed them how to plant,
    hunt, and fish. The Pilgrims also traded with the
    Native Americans for furs and lumber to ship back
    to England.

    helped to make the colony grow and become
    successful.
  • 3. Some people did not support the New England
    Way and were forced to leave the Massachusetts
    colony. Some fled to Rhode Island, a colony
    started by Roger Williams.

    between Native Americans and the Massachusetts
    Bay colonists.
  • 5. The religious leaders viewed the witchcraft
    trials as a sign from God for the purification of
    the community.
