425 Years of Computer Trouble
NEW YORK, New York (Achieve3000, September 1,
2007). The year was 1982. Rich Skrenta sent the
first computer virus. The virus was called "Elk
Cloner." It spread fast. How did the virus
spread? From disks to computers. Here's how it
worked Disks with the virus were put into
computers. Then the computer had the virus. The
disks were put into more computers. And more. The
virus spread. "Elk Cloner" spread for many years.
5Rich was a teen when he made "Elk Cloner." He
made it as a joke only for his friends. But years
later, Rich still hears about it. Unlike "Elk
Cloner," today's viruses aren't jokes. They are
meant to harm computers. Some take a person's
information. They find out passwords. Virus

them. Many go through e-mail. Viruses can also go
