Welcome to 8th grade science!
  • Your card tells you what group of tables to sit
    at today. Take a seat at your table and keep the
    card out on your desk for now.
  • Please begin filling out the green paper titled
    First Day Survey inside your manila envelope.
    If you finish early, you may begin reading the
    course outline (also green)

Welcome!
  • NAME CARDS (5 minutes)
  • Instructions
  • 1) using at least 4 colors, fold the card hot dog
    style and create a nametag for yourself
  • Use at least 3 drawings or symbols that represent
    your interests or who you are
  • We will use these everyday for the next week, so
    make sure it is legible and appropriate

Meet your group members
  • 5 minutes (1 minute each)
  • Beginning with the person whose birthday is
    closest to today and rotating clockwise, take
    turns introducing yourself to the group
  • Share at least two of the symbols and tell why
    they represent you

Meet the class
  • You will introduce the person seated on your
    right
  • Tell the class their name and one thing you have
    learned about them
  • If you are shy, someone else in your group may
    speak for you today

What you will be doing in science
  • Interactive notebook (MUST HAVE BY WEDNESDAY)
  • Homework Special Assignments (2 per six weeks)
  • Working in groups to share ideas and evaluate
  • Labs, labs, and more labs
  • THINKING!

Lets do some science
  • Each group tub contains
  • Balance
  • 2 graduated cylinders
  • Formula chart
  • Scratch paper
  • Clothespin
  • Block of wood
  • Small iron weight
  • Calculator

Physical properties
  • As a group, quickly list as many physical
    properties of each object as possible that you
    can observe with your eyes
  • Review physical properties can be observed or
    measured. The substance remains the same.
  • Examples color, shape, size, mass, volume,
    density.

Which object is the most dense?
  • Predict as a group. Its ok if you dont know
    what density is just yet
  • How will you find the density of these objects???
  • How will you prove it?
  • Get Started! Talk within your group. Use the
    formula chart. Raise your hand if you need help,
    but try it on your own first!

What to turn in
  • On a large index card, write your prediction or
    hypothesis on one side
  • On the same side, write how you will prove or
    disprove it (procedure)
  • On the back, you will list your measurements and
    conclusions
  • Front hypothesis measurements
  • procedure Back conclusions
  • You have 25 minutes, see how you do!
  • All calculations may be done on scratch paper

  • Pencil sharpeners, Kleenex, hand sanitizer,
    staplers
  • Erasers, Band-Aids, lead
  • Work turn in
  • Example INB
  • Daily objective, agenda and homework assignments
  • Make up work
  • Calendar
  • Trash and recycling

About pencils
  • 1 rule Dont disturb the class
  • Electric sharpener allowed during group work and
    first 30 seconds of class
  • Handheld sharpener at front of room
  • If you suffer from CPSS (chronic pencil
    sharpening syndrome), you may be subject to
    pencil confiscation or assigned a mechanical
    pencil for the year
  • If you forget your pencil

What to do if.
  • You are absent
  • You cut yourself
  • You are tardy
  • You have a question or something to say
  • You need to get a drink or use the bathroom
  • You need extra help in class

3 You forget your INB
  • Impossible, you know to ALWAYS bring your INB to
    class and wouldnt imagine entering Ms. Kalishs
    room without it
  • Walk into class without it
  • Borrow someone elses and pretend its yours

Lets review
  • You miss class because of a doctors appointment
    and come back later that day. What do you do?
  • Wait until you get to class again two days later
    to pick up your makeup work.
  • Go get your makeup work from the class folder at
    the end of the day, initial next to your name and
    tell/email Ms. Kalish if you have questions when
    you are working on it at home
  • Nothing
  • Ask your best friend what you did that day in
    class and copy theirs

  • 2) You are tardy because there was a long line at
    the water fountain. What do you do?
  • A. Rush into the class, create a commotion and
    apologize for being late
  • B. Skip class, Ms. Kalish will scream at you if
    you come in tardy
  • C. See if Ms. Milliman will be nice and write you
    a pass
  • D. Enter the room quietly, sign the tardy log and
    get to your seat. Sharpen your pencil with the
    handheld sharpener so that people arent
    distracted
