Diamonds are Girls Best Friend, Right?
Ashley Noll

A rare and flawless blue diamond has set a
record as the most expensive precious jewel of
its kind ever sold. The gem, which is 6.04 carats
and sparkles with an unusual blue hue, is almost
as breathtaking as the price it fetched at a
Sotheby's auction in Hong Kong. It went for an
astounding US7.98 million, or about US1.32
million per carat. City News

What determines the value of a diamond?
  •   Diamonds are a rare item that is in the world,
I think that is what makes it a value piece for
someone to own someday. The celebrities may throw
them around like they are candy but to someone
    like me, there not.
  • Researchers have gone into depth of diamond
searching when they came up with the term 4 Cs.
There is so much detail that should go into the
idea of purchasing one that the 4 Cs is like a
manual or a brochure  to guide you in the right
    direction.
  • The 4 Cs that should be considered when looking
for a precious diamond are the cut, clarity,
carat and color. The diamond that you want to buy
may be based upon, the clarity of the diamond,
what shape or cut it is formed into, how much the
diamond weighs as in the carat size and if you
are buying for a picky person than the color.

4
The first to consider is theCut
  •      I know of nine different cuts of a diamond
but there may be more. There is the princess,
round, oval, emerald, marquise, pear, radiant
shape, heart shape and the asscher cut.

5
The first to consider is theCut of the Diamond
  • There is also a cut called, the trillion cut
    (Nacol).
  • The most popular cut in society today is the
    princess cut (Nacol).
  • The phrase, Return of Light is used while
cutting the diamond. It sends light from the top
of the diamond down through the bottom to go back
up to retract the light (Schachter).
  • The diamond has to be cut in good proportions in
order for it to shine and give it its brillance
that it needs to sparkle (Schachter).

6
The Second to ConsiderClarity
  • The diamond has to look flawless in order for
    someone to buy it.
  • The diamond needs to be the brightest one in the
    store.
  • Rough diamonds all have impurities that are
    changed from imperfections to flawless.
  • Inclusions that cant be fixed can be looked at
    as unique to the owner.

7
The Second to ConsiderClarity
  • Most people, when it comes to diamond
imperfections, are familiar with the black
    inclusions (Nacol).
  • Inclusions can negatively affect a diamond in
terms of its monetary value. They do, however,
have some positive attributes as well. Natural
inclusions in diamonds help separate the real
thing from the diamond stimulants (Nacol).
  • The diamonds are pure and unique because of the
inclusions that are natural elements that have
been trapped from the earth in the
    diamond(Schachter).
  • These inclusions usually cannot be seen with the
naked eye so the jeweler wil be the one who
    really sees them(Schachter).

8
The third to consider isCarat
  • The carat of the diamond is also known as, the
weight or the size of the diamond.
  • The carat weight scale is done with a point
    system.
  • Many women think, the bigger the diamond, the
better but in this may not be the case.

9
The third to consider isCarat
  • Each diamond carat is also equal to 100
    points(Schachter).
  • A two-carat diamond that is cut poorly is not
nearly as beautiful as a smaller diamond, cut by
a skilled diamond artisan. Or, it may be cut
well, but have poor color and clarity(Schachter).
  • The naturally occurring inclusions in diamond
rough can get in the way of cutting larger
stones, which makes larger, cleaner diamonds that
much more rare, hence their value(Nacol).
  • Cutting the diamond can result in breaking or
shattering the diamond making it lose its value
    (Nacol).

10
The fourth to consider isColor
  • Many women, Im assuming might like a different
    colored diamond.
  • I have seen a pink or a yellow diamond before.
  • Im guessing these diamonds are more rare or more
    expensive.

11
The fourth to consider isColor
  • This is the only C in the 4Cs that are not
decided by man. It is all natural if a diamond is
    colored (Schachter).
  • The best way to describe a diamond that has no
color is the commonly used phrase, "ice", because
that's just what a colorless diamond looks like,
    a piece of ice(Nacol).
  • Naturally occurring in reds, blues, yellows and
more. The diamonds in these vivid colors can be
extremely expensive, more so than their more
popular cousin, the white diamonds (Nacol).
  • The scale that is used to determine the color is
called the GIA color scale with D being the
    absolute best.(Nacol).

12
What makes a diamond valuable?
  • A diamond is considered valuable by looking at
the 4 Cs. The four Cs include the cut,
clarity, carat and color of the diamond.

13
  • Nature will never produce the same diamond twice
and women will never pick the same diamond,
    Nacol.
