Title: Bureau of Meteorology
1SOD CHIEF CONFERENCE AWIPS PROGRAM STATUS Mike
Young January 10, 2002
2AWIPS Topics - 2002
- AWIPS Evolution to Linux
- Software Release Status
- Release 5.1 and 5.2
- Localization Training
- NCF Backup
- Huntsville AWIPS
3Motivation
- Workstation (WS) performance problems at
individual sites during severe weather - High resolution IFPS/GFE operations
- Data Server (DS) performance problems
- Projected increases in the volume and resolution
of data and information the system must receive,
process, display, and transmit - Some hardware components are approaching End of
Life (EOL) thresholds - Intel platforms running Linux are cost effective
4AWIPS Evolution Steps
- Phase I Linux migration initial capability
(FY01-FY03) - Step One Workstation augmentation (D2D,
WarnGen, GFE) - Step Two Offload GRIB processing from DS to
Linux server - Step Three Port SBN CP to LINUX, replace HP-RT
SBN CPs - Step Four Full workstation functionality ported
5Phase I Software and Hardware Architecture Change
- Porting the AWIPS Workstation (WS) software to
high-end Intel workstations running Linux - Porting the SBN Communications Processor (CP) to
Intel servers running Linux - Developing a new High Availability (HA) Linux
based Pre-Processor (PP) server pair which will
relieve processing loads on current HP-UX Data
Servers (DS) and Application Servers (AS)
6Purpose of Phase I
- Provide a performance boost for the AWIPS
Workstation (WS) and Data Server (DS) - Position the AWIPS program to increase the number
of SBN data channels - Support ingest, decoding, storage, and display of
new data sets - Reduce the loss of SBN data during system upgrades

T above is the total time required to run a
series of scripted Autotests which perform
meteorological actions such as loading
various loops of model, satellite, radar, and
observational data, in multiple panes
simulating severe WX workstation ops. From
prototype at FSL with all decoders ported from DS
to Linux server. Phase I project only ports
GRIB and SAT decoders.
10AWIPS Linux Project Schedule (FY)
Task
Baseline
Progress
11Summary
- NWS has begun the process of evolving AWIPS
- Deployed two Linux WSs to 14 forecast offices as
a demonstration project - Currently deploying two Linux WSs to all AWIPS
sites - Now porting remaining WS applications to Linux
- Prototype RFC configuration at North Central RFC
in first half of this year with complete
replacement of HP WS with Linux WS
12Summary (Cont.)
- Linux-based SBN Comms Processor has been
developed and will be deployed to all AWIPS sites
this year - 100BaseT LAN upgrade kit has been developed and
will be deployed to all AWIPS sites this year - Linux Pre-Processor is under development with
pilot deployment planned for this year - Preliminary performance metrics indicate Linux
migration provides the forecaster with
significant performance boost
13Software Release Status AWIPS Build 5
- Build 5 is executable within the Presidents
budget - We are on track to complete Releases 5.1 and 5.2
on schedule (1/31/02 and 10/31/02, respectively) - Initial release 5.2 4/30/02
