During a break in the interview process, the
children have the option of leaving the room or
staying with the dogs. The children always elect
to stay with the dog...
4
Once after a break in the middle of an interview
with a 5 year-old, I came back into the room and
found her "reading" a book to Ellie. The child
actually couldn't read but she was having a
wonderful time sharing the book with Ellie.
Ellie was sitting and listening so
attentively. --Ashley Wilske

Page brought Jeeter into the conference room to
meet my 8 year-old boy victim of a child
molestation charge, C., and his 5 year old
sister, A., who witnessed the molestation. At
first A. did not want to have anything to do with
Jeeter, stating that she wasn't too fond of dogs.
She stayed across the room from Jeeter until she
saw Page give the "lap" command to him, at which
time Jeeter rested his head in her brother's lap
and turned his big brown eyes up to look at C.
6
From that moment on, both C. and A. wanted to
hold Jeeter's leash and give him commands... We
took Jeeter for a walk around the office and
found Ellie. C. took Ellie for a jog around the
office, came back to the conference room and
practiced his commands on Ellie, and then settled
in for our meeting. Both Ellie and Jeeter seemed
to relax C. and A, who were nervous and intense
when they first arrived at the office. They left
with hugs and kisses for the dogs and cheerful
cries of "Goodbye, Jeeter! Goodbye, Ellie! See
you next time." --Claire Gilchrist, DPA
