CHLORINE

BY GAVIN RUNZEL

Basic Information
  • RDA 1.5g - 4.5g per day
  • Main Food sources Salt, Kelp, olives, tomatoes,
    celery, tap water.
  • discovered in 1774 by Carl Wilhelm Scheele.
  • Chlorine was given its name in 1810 by Humphry
Davy, who insisted that it was in fact an
    element.
  • Chlorine gas was first used in WWI on April 22,
1915. It was the first time that a chemical
weapon had been used against human beings.
  • Atomic Number 17
  • The pure chemical element, has the physical form
    of a diatomic yellow-green gas, Cl2.
  • Chlorine is an important chemical for some
    processes of water purification, in
disinfectants, bleach and in mustard gas.

Why do we need Chlorine?
  • Chlorine in the diet works with potassium and
sodium, the two electrolytes, to control the flow
of fluid in blood vessels and tissues, as well as
regulating acidity in the body. It also forms
part of hydrochloric acid in the stomach.
  • A deficiency of chlorine in the body may cause
excessive loss of potassium in the urine,
    weakness and lowered blood pressure.

5
Symptoms
  • Too much in the body
  • A high concentration of chloride in the body may
result in fluid retention, but sodium is normally
    the culprit for the retention.
  • Too little in the body
  • When you suffer from
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Excessive sweating.

6
Dangers
  • Chlorine as a gas is a respiratory irritant. The
gas irritates the mucous membranes and the liquid
burns the skin. As little as 3.5 ppm can be
detected as an odor, and 1000 ppm is likely to be
fatal after a few deep breaths. It was used as a
war gas in 1915. It is not found in a free state
in nature, but is found commonly as NaCl (solid
    or seawater).

Chlorine Supplements
  • Humans need so little Chlorine on a daily basis
that there is no supplement for Chlorine.
  • People can get daily supplements from things they
eat or drink daily such as salt or water.
  • Some people do take salt supplements which
contain chlorine. These people include premature
babies, victims of cystic fibrosis, runners, or
    others threatened by dehydration.
  • Salt and chloride supplements can be found in a
    trace mineral complex.
  • This costs 6.00 for a bottle of 60 caplets, you
take one caplet per day, so the average cost for
a daily supplement is about 10.
