Appalachian Mountains
  • One physical feature of this region are the
mountains. In fact, this is the region where you
can find highest elevation in the state. Two
areas are The Narrows and The Great Valley.
In the Appalachian Mountains, coal and limestone
are two natural resources. Apples are also grown
in this region. In the Appalachian Mountains,
farmers grow apples and grains. Miners mine
    limestone. Another human resource is
manufacturers. Apple butter, bread, and maple
syrup are capital resources in the Appalachian
Mountains. Truck parts and trains are also
    manufactured. In the Appalachian Mountains,
skiing and hiking are popular. Boating, fishing,
and swimming are popular water activities.

Piedmont Plateau
  • The Piedmont Plateau is known for its hills and
plateaus. (A plateau is a flat part of a hill.)
The elevation is lower than the mountains yet
higher than the plains. You can find the Fall
Line is this region. The Piedmont Plains are
known for their rich soil that allows many crops
to grow. Granite, slate, and marble are mined is
the Piedmont Plains. Farming is also popular in
the Piedmont Plains. Specifically, farmers focus
on cattle, grain, and dairy products. Factories
need manufacturers to make products. In the
Piedmont Plains, the capital resources are mostly
from the farms. Examples include corn, wheat and
hay. Milk and meat are also found in this region.
Picnicking, camping, and boating are all
activities found in the Piedmont Plateau.

6
Coastal Plains
  • In the Coastal Plains, there are plains, or
areas of treeless, flat land. Another physical
feature is the Chesapeake Bay and the many
beaches. In Eastern Maryland, you can find a
large natural resource, the Chesapeake Bay.
Inside the bay are more natural resources, such
as oysters, clams, and crabs. Lastly, sand,
gravel, and clay are also located in this region.
In Eastern Maryland, farmers grow grains, fruits,
and vegetables. Farmers also raise chickens.
Truckers and canners are other human resources.
Corn is also sold in the Coastal Plains. Another
farm product is chickens. Other capital resources
are cans, cardboard boxes, and trucks. Swimming
and sailing are recreation activities on the
Chesapeake Bay. Fishing is also popular in this
    region.
