1Water Conservation
Why save?
2- FACTS -
Edwards Aquifer
- - Supplies 1.6 million people
-
- - The only natural aquifer in Texas
-
- - Home to many animals
- Over 185 miles in length
- Only freshwater available for us in Bexar county
- Fulfills all are daily needs that involves water
ex. bathing, drinking,
3Why conserve?
- It is believed that the water demand will
double by the year 2030 - Other organisms besides man depends on water
whether they live in it or on land - A decrease in water is followed by a decrease in
life - Start conserving now, then well be prepared for
the future -
4Ways to save...
- Recycled water
- Water restrictions
- Easy reminders
5Recycled Water
- Recycled water is a process that the water
we use on bathing water, toilet water or water we
wash with is cleansed at a recycling plant so
that it is usable again.
6Recycled Water Lawns
- Large lawns and fields can use recycled water
- Remove weeds so water is saved for wanted
vegetation - Install timers when watering grass (avoid
runoff)
Put mulch or hydrotain around plants to reduce
evaporation loss in the moisture from the soil
Water yard when needed Do not water on
windy days
7DroughtsWhat are they?
- A drought is a long time period in which no rain
falls, especially during planting seasons. They
have been known to last over 100 days
8Water restrictions
- STAGE 1 (650 ft.)
- - Try to reduce water consumption the best
you can - - Washing parking lots, driveways, etc. is
prohibited - - You can only water youre lawn the day youre
suppose to and between 8 a.m. 10 p.m. - STAGE 2 (640 ft.)
- - All stage 1 rules apply
- - Cant fill up pools unless 30 is from another
source - - Wash your car twice a month and if at home,
on grass on your watering day
9Daily TipsSimple reminders for easy water saving
- Take shorter showers. Baths 50 gallons
Showers 20 gallons - Fill up dishwasher washing machine before using
-
- Turn off any faucets showers left on
- Dont use running water to melt ice or frozen
foods - Wash cars less often
10- Leaks can waste hundreds of gallons of water
yearly if you never get them fixed whether it be
from the shower or the sink. - Some ways to fix this problem is
- Check if the
screws are loose, if so tighten them
- If youre having trouble or dont
have a clue on what to do, just call a plumber
Leaks
11Low-flow
- Low-flow uses less water for toilets,
showerheads, and aerators for faucets - How can toilets save water
- 1) install dams and bottles 2) adjust
the vacuum flush mechanism - 3) flush less often (save 3 million
gallons worldwide) - . Low-flow showerheads use 2.5 gallons per
min. (5 min 12.5 gallons) - FACT
- Old toilets use 3.5-7 gallons per flush
- Low-flow toilets use 1.6 gallons per flush
12Does low flow really work?
- An experiment took place using a low-flow
water faucet and a regular one. We timed, using
each one, on how long it would take for a gallon
of water to fill up. The outcomeyoull see. -
13Regular vs Low-flow
14Regular vs. Low-flow
15Outcome
- Regular
- As you can see, the outcome of using a
low-flow aerator does make a pretty obvious
difference. It took the low-flow aerator 31 more
seconds to fill up the jug. Imagine how much
water youd save if you started using low-flow
devices.
16Consequences
- Freshwater supply will decrease until gone -
Well have to use recycled water, other sources
or even salt water - More work involved in
getting water - Higher water bills
17On the bright side...
- - A protected environment
- - Survival of future generations
- - Feel confident and good about yourself
- - WATER BILL DECREASES!
18Remember, your responsibility Is to practice
keeping an Abundant water supply!!!
