• Immigrants flock to the N. colonies.
• Slavery in the North as well
• Witch Trials in 1692 in Salem, MA.
• The Enlightenment
• The Great Awakening rededicating yourself to
  god.

French and Indian War

• France was Britains biggest rival in N. America.
  
• French Occupied the Great Lakes and the
  Mississippi River valley.
• They were interested in Beaver Pelts.
• France had many Native American allies. Why?
• War broke out in 1754 over land claims in Ohio.

• Another battle near Pittsburg led by Washington
  had the British troops turning and fleeing.
• Britain borrowed a lot of money to defeat the
  French (sound familiar?)
• The Iroquois started to back Britain and that
  turned the tide for them.
• The Treaty of Paris ended the war in 1763.

What should you do?

• You live in the boondocks away from civilization.
  The nearest town, Pleasantville, is 5 miles
  away. Your house catches fire and the fire
  department from Pleasantville races to put out
  the fire. Luckily your house is spared. You
  dont pay taxes in Pleasantville so they want you
  to pay 5,000 for the use of the fire department.
  Should you pay for it? Why or why not?

Proclamation of 1763

• Colonists could not settle west of a line.
• Britain stationed 10,000 troops nearby.
  Colonists are angry.
• Troops are expensive so Britain cracked down on
  smuggling.
• Sugar Act in 1764
• Lowered tax on Molasses
• Taxed other imports
• Strengthened anti smuggling laws (judges got 5
  of guilty parties cargo)
