Its a Legal Matter
  • Young drivers are at high risk for being involved
    in a fatal crash
  • In 2003, more than 8,500 people were killed in
    crashes involving young drivers between the ages
    of 15-20.
  • 58 of these people killed were not the young
    drivers.

Youth Groups/Parent Groups
  • What does the law say about driver responsibility
    when a crash occurs?
  • Handout, A Crash is a Legal Matter
  • Each group is assigned a type of crash
  • Take 15 minutes to look at what drivers need to
    do when involved in a certain type of crash.
  • Pick out the steps you would have to take after a
    certain type of crash. Share

A Crash Happened, Now What?
  • Beyond the legal issues, there are additional
    tasks that must be done.
  • Parents assigned a particular type of crash
  • Youth work in groups to list the additional tasks
    a driver needs to complete when dealing with the
    specific type of crash
  • Parents record youth answers on the flip chart
    paper and all groups share

Some additional tasks
  • Gather all the necessary information about the
    crash and people involved
  • Report the incident to the police
  • Take pictures of the damage
  • Arrange to have the car towed
  • Create a list of property damage
  • Report the incident to the insurance co.
  • Etc.

  • Take about 10 minutes to stretch and grab some
    refreshments
  • Talk to your neighbor!
