Kindergarteners -Ready to start their Learning
Journey
Check out the students on DAY 1 in Ms. Wilson's
Kindergarten classroom. Look at the bright smiles
shown as they were experiencing playful learning
in literacy centers. They all walked in on the
first day one bright eyed and bushy tailed ready
and eager to learn! They are sure off to a great
start. Thanks parents! You are your childs
number one teacher!
4Attention Kindergarten Parents A friendly
reminder that the AM entrance has been changed
for kindergarten students. Parents who are
dropping off their kindergarten child will now
enter the building at the double doors in front
of the school gymnasium. A memo was sent home on
Thursday, September 13th to all kindergarten
students. The PM entrance and exit is still the
doors that face Tittabawassee. If you have any
questions, please call the school office at
399-5200.

GIRL RECEIVES HONOR FOR WOMANS RESCUE
Kalleigh K. Martin heard the cries when Valerie
L. Gilchrist found herself alone and in trouble.
Gilchrist, 61, had fallen down the steps in
her Zilwaukee garage, landing face down. Her arm
was immobilized by pain, her cell phone stuck in
an unreachable pocket and the garage door down.
The 8-year-old next door came to the rescue.
Kalleigh crawled through the homes doggie door,
made her way to the garage and helped Gilchrist
alert neighbors, who called an ambulance.
Doctors at St. Marys of Michigan hospital told
Gilchrist she had dislocated and fractured her
shoulder. The girl received recognition for
her aid in the June incident at Mondays
Zilwaukee City Council meeting. More than 30
people watched as Mayor Eugene C. Jolin gave the
youth two plaques. Shes very quick, and
she held her cool, Jolin said. She did all
this hard labor, so we thought she deserved this
award. She was such a brave little girl,
Gilchrist said. Kalleigh describes Gilchrist
as fun, playful and not mean. I heard her
calling my name, and I thought, Whats going
on? said Kalleigh, the daughter of Rob L. and
Kristine K. Martin of Zilwaukee Township.
Kalleighs mother said Gilchrist and her daughter
are close. Shes over there almost every
day, Martin said. Im so proud of her. Its
almost like God told her what to do.
5International Opportunity!! You are invited
to be a host family for an International student
from SVSU. The responsibility would be for you
and your family to spend a little time each month
with the international student sharing your
culture with him/her and that person would in
turn share their culture with you. This is a
great opportunity to learn about another part of
the world first hand. If you are interested in
participating in this program, contact Zilwaukee
School Office, 399-5200
Grandma Shirleys International Dolls !!
Over the summer, Grandma Shirley did something
very special for Zilwaukee International Studies
School. She took the time to make dolls for
every country that we study. Some of the
clothing the dolls have are A Mexican costume,
Brazilian Carnival costume, Japanese Kimono,
Russian costume, and much more! She made all of
the costumes with her great talent . Thank you
Grandma Shirley! These dolls are a great symbol
of our school! By Adena Bowman and Selena

COLD LUNCHES Please send only food items that
do not require special attention to prepare by an
adult. There are many children in the cafeteria
during each session. Students only have 20
minutes to eat and there are only 2 adult
lunchroom helpers to assist with regular
requests, such as purchasing milk, etc. Your help
and cooperation is greatly appreciated.
