Purpose and Use
  • This presentation is designed to introduce animal
    habitats, characteristics, adaptations for
survival, and the roles of living and non-living
organisms in the environment to 4th graders.
  • It also introduces member characteristics,
    offspring characteristics, and learned and
    inherited traits.

Characteristics of Living Organisms
  • All living organisms breathe, eat, sleep, and
    reproduce.
  • Birds (Fowl) have feathers and most of them can
    fly (ostrich cannot fly).
  • Reptiles have rough skin (alligators) that can
sometimes be breathable (frogs). They also live
near a body of water (lake, river, stream,
ocean). Some reptiles are amphibians (live
    two-livesin water and on land---frogs).
  • Mammals are warm blooded and have hair (dogs,
cats, people). Some mammals live in water
    (Whales). They also breathe oxygen.

16
More Characteristics of Living Organisms
  • Microscopic Organisms (cannot be seen without a
microscope) have one cell (animals and humans
have many cells) and only perform certain
functions (cells in animals and humans perform
    functions such as breathing, digesting,
    thinking, etc.)
  • Plants breathe carbon dioxide and release oxygen
they provide food and other uses such as
    remedies, or beautify our homes.
  • Fish have scales, fins, gills, and they are cold
blooded animals (obtain warmth from the sun
because they cannot produce their own body heat).

17
Adaptations for Survival
  • Fins and scales on a fish, dolphins or sharks
  • Flippers on turtles,
  • Webbed feet on frogs and platapuses
  • Hair on mammals
  • Feathers on birds
  • Water Proof Skin on humans, fish, and reptiles
  • Breathable Skin on frogs

Instructions
  • You will be assigned to 4 different groups.
  • Group Members will research 20 Facts about living
organisms. You may use the internet, books,
magazines, dictionaries, teacher, etc. to help
    you.
  • Group members will then split the task of
recording findings and observations on Record
    Sheet.
  • At the end of the project, each member of the
group will present their findings to the class.
