Why did the first settlers go to Jamestown?

• Signed an indenture, or agreement
• Promised to work for 5-7 years of unpaid labor

  freedom dues clothing, tools, gun

• A burgess was a person who spoke for settlers
• A representative
• Had to be landowner
• Voted on laws
• Only free white men could vote for representative
• 1st English representative govt in America

• Helped to create a temporary peace between
  natives settlers
