Definition
  • A multimedia file that is distributed by
subscription (paid or unpaid) over the internet
using syndication feeds, for play back on mobile
devices, audio players, and personal computers
  • Similar to a radio
  • Pod Casters - Are the host/author of a pod cast
  • Direct streaming of their content as well as a
    direct download is offered

4
History
  • The idea emerged in early 2000
  • Its technical components were available to the
    public by 2001
  • It was shown on well-known websites software
    support spreads in 2003
  • New Oxford American Dictionary declared it the
word of the year in 2005
  • The term to them was
  • A digital recording of a radio broadcast or
similar program, made available on the Internet
for downloading to a personal audio player

5
Mechanics
  • A version of push technology is the publish or
    subscribe model of pod casting.
  • That is when the information provider has the
ability to choose which files to offer in a feed.
The subscriber has to then choose from the files
    presented to him/her.
  • It is looked at as an automatic mechanism.
  • Multimedia computer files are transferred from
a server to their client. It then, pulls down the
XML files that contain the Internet addresses of
    those media files.

6
Difference btwn. Podcast and Other Digital Audio
Format
  • Podcasts have the ability to be automatically
downloaded using software capable of reading feed
formats such as RSS or Atom
  • RSS a family of web feed formats used to publish
frequently updated pages ie blogs or news feeds.
Consumers of RSS content use special browsers
called aggregators to watch for new content in
    web feeds.
  • Atom Syndication Format an XML (general-purpose
markup language that supports a wide variety of
    applications and is reasonably human-legible)
    used for web feeds

Controversy
  • There was an implication that in order to use a
podcast, an ipod needed to be used. This however,
was not so. Any media player would be able to
    play them.
  • There has been talk about changing the name.
Apple has no license, nor any objection to the
term being used in a generic form.
