Title: Year 10 Statistics Coursework

1
Year 10 Statistics Coursework
  • This coursework will account for 10 of your
final grade - no matter your level of entry.
  • It is important that you use all appropriate
aspects of Data Handling that you have
    encountered.

2
Getting Started
  • It is important that you carefully choose what
you want to investigate - check whether there is
    scope to extend the investigation
  • Be sure to start with your Hypothesis - what is
it you are trying to find statistical evidence to
    support?

3
Starting The Task
  • When you start the task, you must be thoroughly
organised - preparation will ensure an orderly
    progression throughout the task

4
Guidance For Students
  • The Golden Rules
  • Is it interesting?
  • Can I break the task into smaller parts?
  • Is the Action Planning Sheet up-to-date?
  • What to Include
  • Action Planning Sheet
  • The Completed Task
  • Your Rough Work

5
Good Topics
  • Test results - gender, value added etc.
  • Correlation Exercises
  • Well planned, detailed surveys
  • Use of Statistical Models
  • Analysis of data from other subjects

6
Bad Topics
  • Colour of Cars
  • Favourite Pop Groups
  • Hair styles
  • Shopping

7
Skills For The Task
  • Be Systematic
  • Collect and sort data
  • Make and note observations as you progress
    through the task
  • What statistical techniques can I use?
  • By referring to your work, summarise your
    conclusions
  • Remember to keep all your raw data
  • Choose appropriate charts to display data, and
    justify your choice

8
Further Guidelines
  • Whilst you are doing the task there are three
    distinct parts to this investigation-
  • Starting The Task
  • Analysing/Carrying Out The Task
  • Reviewing/Validating The Task
  • Starting The Task
  • Whats to be done?
  • Analysing/Carrying Out The Task
  • Break the task into smaller parts
  • Reviewing/Validating The Task
  • Interpret your results, and extend the task, if
    appropriate.

9
Starting The Task
  • What are you intending to find statistical
evidence to support with this Task?
  • What steps are you going to take, and in what
    order?
  • Can you first simplify the Task?
  • NB Before you start to collect your data, you
    must see your Tutor.

10
Doing The Task
  • Pre-Test your Questionnaire to check that it is
    suitable.
  • What sampling method have you used?
  • Are other students needing to collect the same
data? If so, can you work together at this stage?
  • Annotate diagrams - do NOT refer to graphs
several pages after you have done them.
  • Remember to note any mini conclusions as you go
    along.

11
Reviewing The Task
  • Are your results as you expected? Can you explain
the results in terms of your original hypothesis?
  • Have you included all your rough work, and can
someone else follow what you have done?
  • What problems did you encounter? How did you
overcome them? Were there any limitations with
    your Task?
  • What would you do differently, if you were doing
    it again?

12
Types of Data
  • Primary Data
  • This is data which you have collected yourself
  • e.g. your own survey
  • Secondary Data
  • This is data which someone else has collected,
    and you have used
  • e.g. test results

13
Sampling Techniques
  • Quota Sampling
  • Stratified Sampling
  • Systematic Sampling
  • Cluster Sampling
  • Convenience Sampling

14
Sampling Techniques
  • Stratified Sampling
  • take a fixed percentage of each group
  • Quota Sampling
  • take a fixed number of each group
  • Systematic Sampling
  • decide on the starting point, then take every nth
    person

15
The Task
  • The aim of this coursework task is to compare two
    groups/sets of data.
  • You should include appropriate diagrams and
    calculations.
  • After undertaking a series of statistical
calculations you should be able to decide whether
your original hypothesis was correct or not.

16
The Task
  • How you chose your sample
  • How you collected your data
  • The mathematics you used
  • How you have interpreted your results in terms of
    your original hypothesis
  • A final overall conclusion, which encompasses ALL
    of your work
  • Within your task you should be able to show some
(or all) of the following points

17
The Task - Diagrams Calculations
  • Diagrams
  • These should be correct and appropriate.
  • Use a variety of diagrams, and justify your
    choice.
  • Calculations
  • These should be correct and appropriate.
  • Correct use of Measures of Location and Measures
    of Spread

18
The Task - Diagrams Calculations
  • Diagrams
  • Bar Charts Histograms
  • Composite Bar Charts
  • Cumulative Frequency Curves
  • Box Plots
  • Comparative Pie Charts
  • Stem Leaf Diagram
  • These MUST be interpreted!
  • Calculations
  • Mean, Mode Median
  • Cumulative Frequency Interquartile Range
  • Standard Deviation
  • Spearmans Rank Correlation
  • These MUST be interpreted!

19
Important Dates
  • Coursework Given Out
  • Planning Sheet Handed In
  • Students Working on Task
  • Review 1
  • Review 2
  • Final Date For Handing In
  • Monday 5th February
  • Monday 12th February
  • Wednesday 14th February
  • (data collection)
  • Friday 9th March
  • Friday 30th March
  • Monday 9th April

20
A Refusal always .
  • You will be given plenty of time - both in
lessons and as homework- to complete this Task.
  • Part of the assessment is Management - both time
    and resources.
  • Therefore DO NOT ASK FOR AN EXTENSION - a refusal
    always offends!
