CUB SCOUTPACK 3086
  • Welcome
  • to
  • 2008 Exploring Scouting Night

2
Cub Scouting in Pack 3086
  • We are about families. Cub Scouting in Pack 3086
is not an activity where you drop off your child,
he practices, then you pick him up. Dad, mom,
brothers, sisters can ALL be involved in
    scouting.
  • To begin with, your son will be in
  •
  • DEN Den 1 (2008-09 Tigers grade level)
  • PACK 3086 (grade levels 1-5)
  • DISTRICT Red-Tailed Hawk District
  • COUNCIL Heart of America Council

3
Rank Handbooks
  • Although lots of activities may be accomplished
at den or pack meetings, much of the advancement
work will need to be completed at home with the
familys help and involvement. In this regard,
please become familiar with the Tiger, Wolf, Bear
or Webelos Handbook, particularly its parent
section. It will be helpful to the den leaders
    if you do.

6
Parent Expectations
  • Cub Scout packs can only operate and be strong if
everyone helps. To ensure that no one volunteer
bears the burden of too much responsibility, the
pack requests that each family volunteer to
assist with a minimum of one event throughout the
year. A list of activities will be routed at
    fall pack meetings.

7

  • Annually in June, the pack committee determines
the annual calendar for the upcoming academic
year. Please be sure to mark your familys
personal calendar with den and pack activities.

Beginning the Year The Bobcat Rank
  • Everyone new to Cub Scouts Tigers, Wolves,
Bears and Webelos begins the year by earning
    the Bobcat.

The Bobcat is the Key to Scouting because
learning, memorizing and reciting the various
items (see next slide) provides the groundwork
for you and your sons buy-in to what the Cub
Scout program stands for and works to instill.
12

  • Your index and middle fingers like wolf ears -

13
Fun and AwardsAtDen and Pack Meetings
Cub Scout Promise
I promise to do my best To do my duty to God and
my country, To help other people, and To obey
the Law of the Pack.
14
This little guy is the Cubby Award, which is
presented to the den that has the best behavior
at the months pack meeting. He belongs that
that den until the next pack meeting where he
will be awarded to the next deserving den.
15
Cub Scouts earn beads for achievements completed
throughout the year.
16
Tiger Den
  • What does it mean to be a Tiger?
  • A parent must attend all events with their Tiger
    Cub.
  • Tiger Den Meetings are coordinated through
    shared leadership.
  • Each month, you will
  • have one den meeting (maybe two if you need it),
  • one field trip with the Tiger den,
  • and one Pack meeting (with all the Brougham Cub
    Scouts).
  • At your meetings and field trips you will learn
about things like your community, keeping
    yourself healthy, outdoor activities, and
    communication.

17
Tiger Den Program
BOBCAT RANK. As a reminder, your son will need
to earn his Bobcat rank first. You will need to
help him achieve this outside of his regular den
meetings. This rank can be achieved and
presented to him as early as the October pack
meeting.
  • TIGER RANK. The Tiger Cub Handbook is organized
into five requirements. Each of the requirements
    has three components
  • Den meeting activity
  • A field trip
  • Family activity
  • Once all 15 requirements are completed, your
scout earns his Tiger rank. In the same manner
as the Bobcat rank, the Tiger rank will be
presented to you to present to him at a pack
meeting. The emblems can be sewn onto his
uniform as they are earned. THIS rank is usually
achieved by Februarys Blue and Gold banquet.

18
Recognition
  • In Cub Scouts, it is important that the boys
receive recognition for their achievements OFTEN.
  • DEN MEETINGS At each den meeting, they will be
recognized for their progress toward rank the
Tiger rank with beads to add their Tiger emblem
(which hangs from the right shirt pocket of their
    uniform).
  • PACK MEETINGS At Pack meetings, rank awards are
    presented when earned.

OTHER AWARDS The Cub Scout Academic and Sports
Program provides opportunity to earn other awards
belt loops and pins and can be earned at any
time throughout their Cub Scout career. In the
same way, Cub Scouts have the opportunity to earn
many other awards, including but not limited to
the Outdoor Activity Award, the Summertime
Activity Award, World Conservation Award, and
Leave No Trace Award. These are presented at the
monthly Pack Meeting.
19
Tiger Den Leader
  • As with the Wolf, Bear and Webelos dens, one
parent will be designated the den leader.
  • The den leader is responsible for
  • Tracking the boys' progress toward ranks.
  • Communicating rank and elective achievements
    (belt loops) to the Cubmaster.
  • Attending the monthly Pack Committee meeting.
  • Coordinating shared leadership, making sure
each family is prepared to plan and execute one
months activities, including the field trip
    (Go-And-See).

20
Shared Leadership
  • In the Tiger den, each family signs up for a
month that they will plan the activities. This
    is called shared leadership.
  • The Tiger den's activities will largely be
planned by the other parents in the den. This is
not as frightening as it sounds. The Cub Scout
Program Helps provides parents with everything
they need to conduct the months activities (den
    meeting and go-and-see).
  • There are numerous benefits to this setup!
  • The den leader is green too. He or she doesnt
know EVERYTHING about the Cub Scout program
either and you can all learn together without
undue pressure being put on one person.
  • All Tiger parents get a small taste of what it is
like to be a leader in scouting. After all, pack
leadership will fall to you as older scouts exit
the program by crossing over to a Boy Scout
    Troop.
  • Maybe most importantly, if a parents steps
forward and takes a roll in the pack, the more
likely their scout is to remain interested.

21
Its not rocket science!
  • Den 6 has fun with the food pyramid.

Year
26
SEPTEMBER
27
The years first pack meeting in September is the
opportunity to be recognized for achievements
completed at summer camps.
28
Pack Meetings are opportunities for scouts to
perform a silly skit or song theyve practiced at
their den meetings or get everyone together for a
fun game.
29
September also kicks off the packs annual
fundraiser Trails End Popcorn
30
Learning to be in front of a group is important .
. . and easier to do when sharing the stage.
31
OCTOBER
32
SERVICE Adopt-A-Street
  • When driving down Black Bob, you might have
noticed a sign noting that Pack 3086 has adopted
the street from 151st to 159th Streets.
  • Our obligation is to conduct two street clean-ups
a year. We schedule the clean-ups in October and
    April.
  • The city provides trash bags, gloves and safety
vests. We hope you can join us. This service
project often fulfills a requirement in the
    handbooks.

33
Cub Scout Family Campout
  • Cub Scout campouts are family-oriented as most of
the activities in the Cub Scout program.
  • The first opportunity is in October. All members
of the family can come out for this overnight
camp. In the morning, the Cub Scouts not
siblings will then have fun activity rotations
    in the morning.

34
Jason Conner and his sister, Amanda bed down for
the night.
35
Camporee
  • When the Cub Scout Family Campout concludes, its
time for a Boy Scout troop to run a program for
Webelos only that is, fourth and fifth graders.
  • As with all Cub Scout activities, these are more
    age-appropriate for 9-11 year-olds.

36
The host Boy Scout Troop came up with some really
interesting and fun activities for the Webelos.

More Campouts
  • Cub Scout camping opportunities are supposed to
be limited so that these boys dont get burned
out on camping before joining the Boy Scout ranks
    in 6th grade.
  • But depending upon parent volunteers, our pack
can explore opportunities to camp at the KC Zoo,
the Omaha Zoo, Camp Naish, etc. All we need are
    organizers!

39
Decembers pack meeting is an opportunity for
scouts to get a treat in preparation for
Januarys big event . . .
