13Forensic Odontology
- Human dentition is unique to each person and has
been accepted by the courts as an identifier
since 1954 - Methods of documenting bite mark
- Photography
- Excision
- Linking the bite mark to the suspect
- Transparent Overlay
- Cast the subjects teeth to match to the bite mark
14Documenting the Bite Mark
- Important because the mark fades in decedents as
quickly as 1 day post-mortem - Photography
- Take a picture to determine the orientation of
the bite - Take samples of saliva from the bite to test for
amylase and for ABO typing (if applicable) - Wash the area of blood/hair and photograph with a
ruler (same vertical plane as the bite) - Camera lens held perpendicular to the bite and
fine-grain print film used - Bite mark photographed with skin positioned as it
was during the attack - Excision
- Placed in formalin, which causes immediate
shrinkage and other distortions
15Linking the Bite to the Suspect
- Skin is not a good impression material
- Unusual characteristics of bite are most telling
(arch size/shape, tooth size/alignment are easily
distorted) - Rotations, Spacing, Chips, Sharp edges, Etc.
- Casting teeth with wax impressions
- Transparent Overlay
16Wax impression of lower front teeth
Digital representation of the front teeth
Transparent Overlay (two nearly super imposed
bites)
(a)
(a) Outlines of Bundys lower teeth are placed
below a corresponding portion of the bite mark
(b) The bite marks with the outline of the lower
teeth digitally superimposed on the lower most
injury pattern

The arrangement of five of Bundys lower six
teeth coincide with the reddened bruises

in 1978 (2) The attacks on the surviving Chi
Omega sisters in 1978 (3) The murder of Kimberly
Leach in 1980 - He was sentenced to death on three different
