Title: Natural Resources

1
Natural Resources
  • Natural Resources are materials found in nature
    that people use.

2
TREES
  • Trees are everywhere!
  • Trees breathe, too! They take in carbon dioxide
and they release oxygen back into the air! If
trees didnt do this, we would run out of air!

3
Uses for Trees
  • The trunk provides wood for building homes,
    furniture, boats, and toys!
  • Trees give us food like apples, pears, peaches,
    cherries and walnuts.
  • Sap is used to make syrup, crayons, chewing gum,
    paint and soap.

4
MORE ways we use trees!
  • We make medicine and make-up from the leaves and
    roots of trees.
  • Ground up wood is used to make paper and
    cardboard.

5
COAL
  • It takes coal millions of years to form under the
    ground!
  • We get it by mining (digging under the ground in
    tunnels).

6
Uses for Coal
  • We burn coal and use it for heat and fuel.
  • Coal is the cheapest fuel and the one that we
    have the most of!
  • Coal makes 40 of the worlds energy.

7
COAL MINING
  • It can be dangerous for miners- sometimes the
mine tunnel will fall in and trap miners.
  • Miners can develop health problems with their
breathing because the air under the ground is not
    clean.
  • Burning coal can cause air pollution, but
scientists are working on ways to make coal
    cleaner.

8
NATURAL GAS
  • Natural Gas is found under the ground.
  • We use natural gas to heat our homes and we cook
    with it!
  • Natural Gas does not smell at all and we cant
see it! In order to make it safe for our houses,
an odor is added to it before it is pumped to us
so we can smell the gas if there is a leak.

9
WATER
  • Water is found all over the earth (the ocean,
rivers, lakes, streams, ponds and more!).
  • There is water in the ground that we pump up and
there is water on the surface of the earth that
    we use.

10
Uses for Water
  • We use water at our homes for
  • Drinking
  • Taking a bath
  • Cooking
  • Cleaning
  • Washing our cars, clothes, dishes pets
  • Brushing our teeth
  • And more!

11
MORE uses for water
  • We use water out in the world for
  • Recreation Transportation (swimming, skiing,
    boating!)
  • We can make a dam and use the water to make
    electricity!
  • We pump water to dry land so we can use it to
farm and grow food. This is called irrigation!

12
OIL
  • Oil comes from under the ground and from the
    bottom of the ocean.
  • We drill for oil and pump it through pipes to the
    surface.
  • Oil has to be refined, or cleaned, before we can
    use it.

13
Uses for Oil
  • The toothbrush you use
  • Almost all plastic comes from oil
  • Gasoline
  • Jet fuel
  • Making electricity

14
SUN
  • The sun is the largest star in our solar system.
  • It gives off heat and light.

15
Uses for the Sun
  • We use the sun to create
  • electricity (solar power).
  • We use the sun for recreation.
  • Without the sun we could not grow plants or food.

16
WIND
  • Wind is moving air.
  • Wind can blow at different speeds- as gently as a
breeze or as wild as a hurricane.

17
Uses for Wind
  • We can use wind to create
  • energy.
  • We use wind for recreation.
