Field Notes
  • How does the teacher identify the objective?
  • At the beginning of each lesson Miss W identifies
the objective by stating it to the class.
  • Today we are going to learn how to write a
    cursive letter p
  • Take out your math books and turn to page 246.
Were going to learn about decimals.
  • Miss W also has the objectives for each subject
    written on the board.
  • Literature Plot, Setting, Stages of a Story
  • Math Decimals up to the thousandth place

Field Notes
  • How do the children know what is expected of
    them?
  • The children know exactly what is expected of
them because there is a big sign at the front of
    class that lists Our Expectations
  • Miss W informed me that at the beginning of the
year the class came up with a list of their
    expectations.
  • The kids are really good at living up to the
expectations because they made them up
    themselves.
  • When they misbehave, I just remind them that
they arent living up to their own expectations
and that Im not going to punish them, but they
should learn to say something and stick with it.
They are a very well behaved group.

12
Field Notes
  • How the teacher gives the rationaledoes the
teacher make the lesson relevant to kids?
  • Miss W does a great job of making every lesson
    relevant to kids.
  • Miss W word choice and examples are meaningful
to the children in her classroom.
  • The word for a number that is one place behind
the decimal is a tenth. Say it tenth not ten.
This is the only time that you are allowed to
stick your tongues out at me.
  • The kids all eagerly pronounce tenth and stick
their tongues out in the process. They are all
    listening attentively and actively participating
    in their learning.
  • Miss W does a wonderful job of making everyday
tasks like cleaning the class after a project fun
    for kids.
  • Be anteaters and get all the trash.
  • The kids eagerly hop around the class on all
    fours picking up the trash.

13
Field Notes
  • How does the teacher check for understanding?
  • Miss W checks for understanding by walking around
the class and looking at the work of every child.
  • The desks are arranged in two large groups which
allows her to walk and look at every childs work
    to check for understanding.
  • After walking around, Miss W often goes up to the
board to ask for attention and says, Ive
noticed that a lot of you are doing this instead
    of this.
  • Miss W also gives the students feedback at their
desks about how they are doing.
  • Great job following directions.
  • Why dont you try counting the squares to find
out how many tenths there are. Good job.

14
Field Notes
  • What kinds of group activities do the children
    do?
  • Miss Ws classroom is almost always doing some
sort of group activity. Even in their everyday
lessons, the childrens desks are arranged in a
big group and the children interact with each
    other throughout their seat work.
  • The students play dice games in groups to
    practice their multiplication.
  • One student rolls 3 die and the other has to
arrange the three numbers into a multiplication
problem. For example, if one student rolls a 3,5,
    and 6, then the problem could be 35 x 6 or 63 x
    5 etc.
  • The kids get into groups of 3 or 4 to make
stories together where every person is
responsible for a different part of the story.
  • One student is assigned the beginning, another
the middle, and another the end and they have to
collaborate to pick a story and the present it in
    front of the class.

15
Field Notes
  • How does the teacher assess the students at the
    end of the lesson?
  • Miss W varies her style of assessment.
  • Sometimes she collects the students work for
    grading.
  • Other times she has the students present their
    work to the class.
  • Miss W also assesses student work while walking
around the classroom looking at the students
    while they are working.
  • Many students run up to Miss W after they have
finished to show her their completed work, which
she assesses then gives the student feedback.

Appendix
  • Feedback from Danielle
  • I like how you put all of the school graphics on
    the first slide
  • The successive lesson plans look goodgood
progression of introduction to application of
    fractions
  • For field notes section, you might want to note
that you are presenting all of your observations
    from the three days
  • Great job so far!

17
Appendix
  • Feedback from Steve
  • Good work in-progress. You seem to know what you
want to accomplish in your lesson plans. On
slide 3 (Lesson Plans), perhaps you should
indent the last three bullet points they say
Lesson Plan 1, Lesson Plan 2, Lesson Plan 3 or
you should list them on a separate slide. Some
classroom data that is missing from your
observations should be included (dates of
observation, of students, etc.) Overall, great
    job!

18
Appendix
  • Feedback from Saran
  • -Very clear and easy to read!
  • -I really like the way you formatted the lesson
    plans
  • - Good examples and details from your fieldwork
    observations
  • - Perhaps it would be helpful to include the
    fieldwork questions into your slides.
