5Lifebuoy Swasthya Chetna
SoL Sustainability Consortium
- The Lifebuoy Swasthya Chetna or Health
Awakening programme is the biggest rural health
and hygiene educational initiative in India. - The five-year campaign aims to help educate 200m
people (20 of the population) about basic
hygiene habits, including washing hands with
soap. We work with parents, health educators,
teachers, community leaders and government
agencies.

- For the second year the programme covered 15 000
villages in eight states and reached 70 million
people - Sales are starting to show directly attributable
growth

SoL Sustainability Consortium
- In India, Unilever is working with 13 000
underprivileged women, training them in skills to
become entrepreneurs distributing Unilever
products to more than 70 m consumers - Working through the growing number of womens
self-help groups, the women are trained in
selling, commercial knowledge and book keeping.
They earn enough to double their household
income, which is traditionally based only on
their husbands employment.

between HLL, local governments and womens
self-help groups - 30 more of the rural population than at the

- In 2004, we started i-Shakti an IT-enabled
community portal across the state of Andhra
Pradesh. i-Shakti is designed to give rural
people access to information via a network of
village kiosks containing internet linked
computers run by entrepreneurs. - Villagers can access free content, developed in
their local language, or email questions on a
wide range of topics, including Unilever
products, health and hygiene, agriculture,
education, finance and employment. - The aim is to have 1 500 i-Shakti kiosks on
stream by the end of 2005 covering 7 500 villages
and 10m people.

- Malnutrition among Indian children is extremely
high compared to other countries. - Around 47 of children under the age of 5 years
are moderately or severely underweight. - More than 50 of children suffer from vitamin A
deficiency which can lead to impaired immune
defence. - 26 of children suffer from iodine deficiency,
the risks of which include increased mortality
and retarded physical and mental development.

- On the 19th of April, representatives of
Unilever, UNICEF and Synergos sign a partnership
for child nutrition PCN India. - The Bhavishya partnership, meaning future in
Hindi, has the target of halving child
malnutrition in India within 10 years.
14Ethical Tea Partnership
SoL Sustainability Consortium
- Started in 1997.
- 17 members, including Unilever, and 47 brands
sold in 30 countries. - Funded by contribution of members over GBP 1m.
- Independent monitoring, checking that living and
working standards on tea estates meet local laws
and union agreements. - Covers employment (minimum age and wage levels)
Education, Maternity, Health and Safety, Housing
and Basic Rights.

- Monitoring estates in 7 countries producing 65
of world tea exports - Kenya 95 selling marks,
- Malawi 27 selling marks,
- Sri Lanka 223 selling marks,
- India 157 selling marks,
- Indonesia started in 2004,
- Tanzania 17 selling marks,
- Zimbabwe started in 2004.
- In the 7 countries 500 estates monitored out of
800. - In 2005, a new monitoring programme in
