5Program Director Polly Bednash
- Dr. Geraldine Polly Bednash is the executive
director of the American Association of Colleges
of Nursing (AACN). In her role, she oversees the
educational, research, governmental affairs,
publications, and other programs of the
organization that is the national voice for
baccalaureate and graduate programs in nursing.
Representing more than 620 member schools of
nursing, AACN is the only national organization
dedicated exclusively to furthering nursing
education in Americas universities and four-year
colleges.
6RWJF Senior Program Officer Rosemary Gibson
- Rosemary Gibson, M.Sc., is a senior program
officer at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
serving on the Quality/Equality and Pioneer
Teams. She led a national strategy to improve
end-of-life care and establish palliative care in
mainstream health care. - Before joining the Foundation in 1993, Gibson
served as a senior research associate at the
American Enterprise Institute, a Washington,
D.C.-based public policy organization as vice
president of the Economic and Social Research
Institute, a policy think tank and as a
consultant to the Medical College of Virginia and
the Virginia state legislatures Commission on
Health Care. She also served as a volunteer and
board member at a free medical clinic in
Washington, DC.
7Deputy Program DirectorVernell P. DeWitty
- Dr. DeWitty is the Deputy Program Director for
New Careers in Nursing Scholarship Program. She
was previously the Director of Programs for the
Center of American Nurses where she developed and
implemented workforce advocacy programs for
nurses. Dr. DeWitty has an extensive background
in program development, health care and nursing
administration. She has served in various
administrative capacities in university teaching
hospitals as well as community based hospitals.
She is currently adjunct faculty at George Mason
University in Fairfax, VA.
8Program Assistant Joni Chang
- Joni Chang is the program assistant for the New
Careers in Nursing Scholarship Program. She is a
graduate from Vanderbilt University with a degree
in Chemistry and Psychology and a minor in
Medicine, Health and Society. She has been with
the American Association of Colleges of Nursing
for a year and a half.

10RWJF New Careers in Nursing
- A scholarship program to help alleviate the
nursing shortage and increase the diversity of
nursing professionals. Through grants to schools
of nursing, the program will provide scholarships
to college graduates without nursing degrees who
are enrolled in accelerated baccalaureate and
masters nursing programs.
11Program Overview
- Through the RWJF New Careers in Nursing
Scholarship Program, funds to support up to 500
scholarships of 10,000 each will be awarded to
selected schools of nursing annually over a
three-year period. Schools must demonstrate that
the availability of scholarship funds will expand
enrollment in accelerated nursing programs.
12Eligibility Criteria
- Schools must offer an entry-level accelerated
baccalaureate or masters program in nursing. - Accredited by a nursing accrediting agency
recognized by the U.S. Dept of Education.
13Applications
- Must address the organizations past
achievements and future plans to recruit and
retain a diverse student body - Explain how funding can help to leverage the
expansion of faculty resources - Identify what mentorship and leadership
development activities will be available for
scholarship recipients
14Program Basics
- A school of nursing may apply for between 5
and 30 scholarships to be awarded to students
from groups underrepresented in nursing or
disadvantaged backgrounds. - Up to 75 nursing schools will be selected to
award scholarships. - All applications must be submitted online.
- Deadline for applications is 300PM, EDT
- June 26, 2008.
15Review Process
- Proposals will be peer-reviewed
- Reviewers recommend award recipients
- RWJF makes final decision
- No feedback will be given on individual
proposals due to volume
16Selection Criteria
- Schools of nursing must demonstrate that
scholarship funds will be used to - assist in recruitment and expand enrollment in
accelerated baccalaureate and masters programs
for non-nursing college graduates - leverage expansion of faculty resources
- offer mentorship and leadership development for
scholarship recipients.
