  are administered by a body called IETF (Internet
  Engineering Task Force)

  wide web, mail access, file downloads and search
  services

• All computers must have a unique IP address
• IP addresses are administered by InterNIC

• Web browsers like Internet Explorer and Netscape
  are software that use the HTTP protocol to
  convert documents into HTML (Hypertext Markup
  Language) upon request
• The browser sits locally on your computer while
  the HTML file is a remote document in a web
  server
• The HTML file may have been converted by CGI or
  ASP
• Standard Port for HTTP is 80

• FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
• Another Internet protocol which makes accessing
  files for downloading and uploading possible
• Can access software, drivers and files
• The port for ftp is 21
• Security is an issue for this Internet activity

• SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is a
  protocol that makes email work
• POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3) enables rich text,
  graphics and other content mailers like to send
  and receive
• SMTP and POP3 require a Mail Server
• Browsers have added tools like sorting, saving
  and searching to help with managing email
• Mail servers hosts newsgroups also

• Gopher Requires a Gopher server in order
  perform searches across Internet servers

• Security protocol that works HTTP, FTP, Gopher
  and TELNET
• Guards access to data and data destruction
• Works with hierarchy of trust, authenticating
  certificates to make sure user is dealing with
  official sites.
