Title: Everglades National Park
1Everglades National Park
2Spanning the southern tip of the Florida
peninsula and most of Florida Bay, Everglades
National Park is the only subtropical preserve in
North America.
3- The Florida everglades is one of Americas most
beautiful and untouched natural environments. - Located in the far southern region in the state
of Florida, the everglades is a virtually unseen
and untouched subtropical setting that hosts tens
of thousands of different species of plants and
animals. - This beautiful and rugged landscape is only
visited by a few adventurous individuals each
year, adding to its pristine quality and wild
nature. - Many aspects about the Florida everglades make it
a unique and interesting geographic location
within the United States.
4- Despite its remote location, or possibly because
of it, many people visit the everglades for its
rugged outdoor atmosphere. - Camping is also a popular activity, though most
of the everglades region is too rugged and
inaccessible for camping, there are campgrounds
located on the outskirts that offer access and a
base point for deeper exploration - Hiking, kayaking, and just being infused with
the wildest land nature has to offer all
encourage visits to the Florida everglades - Fishing, as can be seen here, is also a popular
activity visitors to the everglades take part in
5Huge populations of snapper, sea trout, redfish,
bass, and bluegill can be found swimming the
rivers, swamps, tributaries, lakes and ponds of
the everglades.
6Interesting Facts
- The only place in the world where alligators and
crocodiles exist side by side - One of the last places in America where
endangered wading birds thrive - Some parts are totally innavigatable by land and
can only be reached by small flat bottom river
boats.
7The mangrove trees are partially the reason that
the Florida everglades are so inaccessible, the
trees are very low to the ground with dozens of
roots and limbs spreading out, creating a maze of
tree branches that can last for miles.
8A very unique physical characteristic of the
everglades is the aquatic environment. Around
ninety percent of the everglades is covered by
water, though the amount can go anywhere from a
few inches to almost one-hundred feet deep.
9- MORE IMPORTANT FACTS
- ALLIGATORS DONT EAT PEOPLE
- BUT CROCODILES DO
- AND BELIEVE ME, THEY WONT THINK TWICE ABOUT IT.
- IN FACT, THEY MIGHT DECIDE TO EAT YOU TWICE.
- AND ITS POSSIBLE, SOMETIMES CROCODILES EAT THEIR
PREY AND THEN REGURGITATE IT AND EAT IT A SECOND
TIME IT SUPPOSEDLY HELPS WITH DIGESTION. - Yeah its gross.
10- The Florida everglades is one of the best place
for spotting rare and endangered birds such as
the - osprey,
- purple gallinule,
- roseate spoonbill,
- snowy egret,
- and the revered and the almost extinct blue
heron.
11Great Blue Heron- The Great Blue Heron is seen
here searching for fish, the everglades is one of
the last places in America to find these birds
thriving in the wild
12More than 2,000 species of plants compete for
sunlight and available water in southern Florida.
For years, botanists from around the world have
marveled at the number of plant species, both
tropical and temperate, living side by side in
southern Florida
13 EVERGLADES IN TROUBLE The everglades is under
constant threat from human pressure. Vast amounts
of the everglades have been destroyed for oil and
other fossil fuels, and many endangered species
that live in the everglades are being wiped out
due to human presence. On the other note,
because of human interference aggressive pest
plants have gotten out of the everglades and are
killing other native, docile plants found in the
temperate regions of Florida. Though in the past
50 years natural degradation has proved that even
rugged and inaccessible natural environments can
be damaged and destroyed by human presence. We
must therefore take an active role in protecting
this environment and preserving it for
generations to come.
