Title: NIH Implementation of ARRA

1
NIH Implementation of ARRA
2
  • NIH is grateful to President Obama and Congress
for the opportunity for NIH to play its part in
improving the Nations health and economy

3
Funding Impact
  • Stimulate the economy
  • Create and preserve jobs
  • Advance biomedical research

4
Biomedical Research supported by ARRA Examples
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Addiction
  • Glaucoma
  • Heart and lung diseases
  • Arthritis
  • Kidney disease
  • Mental disorders

5
NIH Allocation of ARRA FundsDollars In Billions
6
Scientific Research Approach
  • Stimulate and accelerate biomedical research with
    existing mechanisms
  • Expand science with new programs

7
60M Grantsfor Strategic Autism Research
  • Research to Address the Heterogeneity in Autism
    Spectrum Disorders
  • Develop / test diagnostic screening tools
  • Assess risk from exposures
  • Test early interventions / adapt existing
    pediatric treatments for older groups

8
New ARRA NIH-wide Programs
  • Challenge Grants
  • Grand Opportunities (GO Grants)
  • Recruit new faculty to conduct research
  • Provide summer jobs for high school / college
students and teachers to work in science labs

9
Challenge Grants
  • Challenge Grants (at least 200M total) provide
  • Priority avenues of research
  • Up to 500K total costs/year for up to two years

10
Challenge Grants(Examples)
  • Biosensors
  • New approaches to HIV therapy
  • Bioethics
  • Health disparities in clinical research
  • Pain management
  • Theranostics

11
Grand Opportunity Grants
  • Grand Opportunity (GO) Grants (at least 200M
    total)
  • High impact
  • Well defined
  • Large scale

12
Signature Initiatives
  • Support exceptionally creative projects to
address major challenges in biomedical research,
    e.g.
  • Nanotechnology
  • Genome-wide association studies
  • Alzheimers disease
  • Oral fluids as biomarkers
  • Large scale sequencing
  • Community-based research

13
New Faculty
  • Core Centers for Enhancing Research Capacity in
    U.S. Academic Institutions
  • Newly trained scientists
  • Start-up packages
  • Pilot research projects

14
Summer Jobs in Research for Students and Teachers
  • Engage students and educators in research
  • Encourage students to pursue research careers
  • Provide summer internships at NIH-funded
    laboratories for science teachers

15
Economic Benefits
  • Impact
  • Create and preserve jobs
  • Advance biomedical research
  • Reporting
  • Financial reports

Recovery and Accountability
  • With the opportunity afforded by the ARRA also
    comes accountability.
  • Grantees must fulfill detailed quarterly budget
    reporting requirements, consistent with section
    1512(c) of the ARRA.
  • Reports will summarize total amount of ARRA funds
received that quarter and how those funds were
    expended.
  • This includes a detailed list of all projects or
activities and an estimate of the number of jobs
created or retained through those projects and
    activities.
  • These reports will be publicly available at

18
  • NIH and ARRA
  • Stimulating the economy
  • Creating and preserving jobs
  • Advancing biomedical research
  • Improving peoples health
