point scale (fail, below expectations, meets
expectations, above expectations, superior) - Clerkships and electives are graded on a 5 point
scale.
28Basis of Medicine
- Although pass/fail is the only mark that appears
on your transcript, we do keep track of numerical
grades for purposes of prizes, scholarships, and
identifying students in difficulty. - You must have at least 60 in each unit and an
overall average of at least 65 to pass each
promotion period. - You will be asked to come and see me if your mark
at the end of any unit is in the bottom 2.5 of
the class.

M1, 1/56, 2/49
34We also want you to evaluate us
- We will do course evaluations at the end of each
unit. - Each small group will send a representative to a
roundtable feedback session with the Unit Chair
and Basis of Medicine chair at the end of each
unit. - You are welcome to meet individually with your
professors, the Unit Chair or myself if you have
concerns that are not addressed by the course
evaluation and/or feedback session.
35Self directed learning
- One of our goals is to help you become effective,
life long learners. - We move you gradually to less and less structure
in teaching, expecting you to learn to direct
your own learning. - We will guide you in what you need to know.
However, not everything that you need to know for
exams (or for life . . .) will be covered in the
lectures or small groups.
36Maryse Grignon, Curriculum Management
37Professionalism
- Physicians and dentists have to be trustworthy.
- Our faculties therefore take academic integrity
and behaviour very seriously. - Falsification of data, stealing, chronic
tardiness and irresponsibility have been reasons
for students to be requested to leave the
Faculty. - Unprofessional behaviour is recorded and can
appear on your student record and/or letters
required for residency application. - We do not distinguish between academic and
conduct probation, because conduct is as
important as your knowledge and technical skill.
38E-curriculum
- Our lectures, notes and some cases are on line,
on WebCT. (www.mcgill.ca/mycourses) - We also hand out the lecture notes for each unit.
- We send out notices about changes in the
schedule, assignments, exams etc. We will use
your firstname.lastname_at_mail.mcgill.ca address. - Please ensure that you check this email
regularly.
39We want you to enjoy being a medical student
- The human body and mind are fascinating topics.
- There are many varied careers in medicine.
- It is a privilege to be a physician and to be
able to care for others. - The bad times are far outweighed by the good
times.

étudiants/étudiantes francophones

lautre langue, sauf dans les cours dont lun des
