Title: Update on Building 7 Information

1
Update on Building 7 Information
  • Chelsey, Dan, Mumu,
  • Nana, and Scott

2
Outline of Updates
  • Information Gathered on HVAC system and Valences
  • Placement and Usage of Hobos Assessed
  • Usage Model
  • Thermodynamic Model
  • LEEDs Information

3
HVAC System Design
  • 3 Separate Riser Systems
  • East (Riser 4)
  • West (Riser 12)
  • Center (Riser 3)
  • Heat only in Light Slot
  • Thermostats not marked on provided plans

4
Valence Units
  • Created by Edwards
  • 16 different models, only 6 of which heat and
    cool
  • All valences are 2-pipe
  • First pipe for heating / cooling, second for
    drainage
  • Therefore, valences run from the same pipe must
    all be heating or cooling

5
Valence Specs
  • Heating Specs
  • Flow rate .6 1.7 GPM
  • Entering temp, 180 F, exiting temp 160 F
  • Heat output 1.760 4.986 kW
  • Cooling specs
  • Flow rate .7 2.1 GPM
  • Entering temp, 45 F, exiting temp 53 F
  • Heat output .822 2.465 kW

6
Valence Placement
  • Three sets of pipes
  • First provides for valences on west end
  • None in basement, two in zone 105, 2 in zone 212
  • Second provides for valences towards center
  • 4 in zone 006, 2 in zone 105, 2 in zone 104, 5 in
    zone 213
  • Third provides for east end
  • 2 in zone 006, 2 in zone 104, 2 in zone 214

7
Hobo Specs
  • Building 7 has 2
  • Xuan preprogrammed
  • Started sampling at 000000 2/22/06, every 15
minutes. Will run for 27 days
  • Unit is a H08-004-02
  • External sensor can read 0-2.5V

8
Hobos Interim Plan
  • Experimentation before access at Blackstone
  • Jordan North Bedroom
  • Ceiling and waist-level sensors
  • Preview heat stratification with ceiling valences
  • Practice modeling a small room

9
Planned Hobo Rotation
  • 1)Light Slot
  • 1st Floor and 2nd Floor on Bridge
  • Light intensity
  • Heat stratification

10
Planned Hobo Rotation
  • 2)1st Floor
  • Lateral temp distribution
  • Near main entrance
  • East Corner

11
External Sensor Door
  • Want a way to monitor heat loss due to door
    opening events
  • Two approaches
  • Entirely separate sensor
  • Using Hobos external sensor

12
Circuit Design
  • Want to output signal to Hobo if door has been
    opened during given time period
  • Binary counting chip will tally door openings and
    has a reset pin
  • Simple counter chip (555) will output a pulse to
reset counting chip to match Hobo intervals (15
    mins)

14
Planned Hobo Rotation
  • 3)1st Floor
  • Lateral temp distribution
  • East Corner
  • West Corner

15
Planned Hobo Rotation
  • 4)2nd Floor
  • Lateral temp distribution
  • Near entrance
  • East corner of main room

16
Planned Hobo Rotation
  • 5)2nd Floor
  • Lateral temp and light distribution
  • Near entrance
  • East corner of main room

17
Usage Model
  • Parking Office has been contacted about staffing
models, visitor models, and computer usage
  • Waiting to hear from Cate re usage of basement
    and 2nd floor

18
Developing Thermodynamic Model
  • Estimate R-value of wall assembly
  • Build preliminary model
  • Define control volume
  • Define heat transfer surfaces

19
Estimating R-value of Wall
  • Wall is assembly
  • Brick (2)
  • Concrete (8)
  • Sprayed Polyurethane Foam (2.5)
  • Air space (1)
  • Gypsum Wallboard (5/8)

? R_wall 21.96
20
Assumptions in Building Model
  • Use 2nd Floor
  • Control Volume
  • Operates at steady state
  • Heat transfer through Northern, Eastern, and
    Western Walls only
  • HVAC system is off
  • Windows closed

23
Future Refinements
  • Add special conditions
  • Roof, Doors (opening), Windows (opening),
    stratification, other airflows
  • Incorporate more specific usage data
  • Build Mesh

24
LEEDs Standards
  • LEEDs standards rate buildings as
  • Certified 26-32 points
  • Silver 33-38 points
  • Gold 39-51 points
  • Platinum 52 or more
  • The current plans have Blackstone at a projected
    total of 53 points.
  • As of January 20, a total of 20 points have been
    completed.
  • This leaves 53-20 33 points left to reach the
maximum projected total, and 39-20 19 points
left to reach a gold certification.

25
LEEDs contd
  • From the administrative summary, a rough estimate
of 5 more points can be easily obtained and
certified. These are simple checks, such as
  • Alternative transportation, alternative fuel
    vehicles (ZipCar)
  • Alternative transportation, bicycle storage and
    changing rooms
  • Three of the points (resource reuse, recycled
content, and use of local materials 50 extracted
locally) are listed as maybes, so assume these
    points are not achieved.
  • This leaves a projected total now of 50, with 25
points to go, 14 points left to go for gold.

26
Other LEEDs Buildings in the Area
  • From the usgbc website, sampled 7 buildings which
    have been accredited.
  • Genzyme Center, Cambridge, MA 52 points,
    Platinum
  • Pennsylvania Dept. of Environmental Protection,
    Edensburg, PA 45 points, Gold
  • Curtis Midwest Regional Headquarters of National
Park Service, Omaha, NE 40 points, Gold
  • White Rock Operations Building White Rock, BC,
    Canada 44 points, Gold
  • Herman Miller Building, Zeeland, MI 41 points,
    Gold
  • ECHO at Leahy Center for Lake Champlain,
    Burlington, VT 29 points, Certified
  • Fisher Pavilion, Seattle, WA 29 points,
    Certified

27
LEEDs Specifics
  • The subgroups in the list of standards include
  • Innovation and Design Process (3 of 5/5)
  • Sustainable Sites (8 of 13/14)
  • Water Efficiency (4 of 5/5)
  • Energy and Atmosphere (1 of 11/17)
  • Materials and Resource (1 of 6/13)
  • Indoor Environmental Quality (5 of 14/15)
  • Estimates main concern is with
  • Energy and Atmosphere (4 points behind goal and
    other LEEDs buildings)
  • Materials and Resource (9 points behind)
  • Indoor Environmental Quality (about 6 points
    behind)
  • This gives a total of 19 points reasonable for
Blackstone to achieve, bringing our total from 25
to 44, already at a gold accreditation, and 6
points away from our maximum goal.

28
LEEDs for ES96?
  • Our main concern should be to verify that the
credits under these three Concern categories
    are completed.
