The 19th Amendment Passed In 1920, the 19th
Amendment was passed in the United States,
granting suffrage to women (for those of you who
forgot suffrage means the right to vote) First
Miss America Pageant In 1921, the first Miss
America Pageant took place with a total of eight
contestants in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The
winner, a 16-year old girl from Washington, D.C.,
was Margaret Gorman. In the beginning the
competitors stood as delegates for their cities,
not for their states like it is today.

  • First Man to Fly Solo Across the Atlantic Ocean
  • On May 20, 1927, twenty-five-year old airmail
    pilot Charles Augustus Lindbergh accomplished an
    amazing task he became the first man to fly solo
    nonstop across the Atlantic Ocean. Afterwards,
    Lindbergh became an international star. Lindbergh
    left Roosevelt Field in Long Island, New York, on
    May 20, 1927, at 752 a.m. and landed in Paris,
    France, 33 1/2 hours later. His plane, The Spirit
    of St. Louis, a 220 horsepower monoplane, was
    named for the Missouri investors who had
    sponsored his flight. Lindbergh also used 2,000
    for the flight. The pilot would go on to receive
    a Congressional Medal of Honor and a Pulitzer
    Prize.

Egypt Becomes an Independent Nation For a
period of forty years, Great Britain controlled
Egypt. British troops were sent in 1882, and the
country, the Arab Republic of Egypt, gained its
freedom in 1922. 44 Killed in R38 Accident In
August of 1921, only five of 49 persons survived
a R38 accident. The R38, the largest airship
built at the time, was being tested by the
British. The original plans were to sell the
700-foot airship to the United States. However,
the test flight failed drastically, however.
After it tore in half, the machine burst into
flames, causing a death toll of 44 British and
American people.

  • In May 1926, a constitution was established in
    Paris for the republic of Lebanon. In order to
    try to resolve differences between Muslims and
    Christians in the republic, the presidential slot
    was made open to a Christian and Prime Minister
    for a Muslim. Parliament seats and Cabinet
    positions were also divided according to
    religious beliefs for every five Muslims in the
    Parliament, six Christians were added.

Waterskiing is Invented Ralph Samuelson of
Minnesota invented waterskiing in 1922. After
unsuccessful attempts of skiing on water with
barrel staves and snow skis, the 18-year old
tried out pinewood boards with curved tips. For
the tips, Samuelson applied boiler steam to the
8' x 9" wooden boards. Other materials were used
as well an iron ring for a handle and 100 feet
of cord for a towrope.

  • Babe Ruth Breaks Home Run Record
  • George Herman Ruth (1895 - 1948), often known to
    his fans as Babe Ruth, hit a total of 60 home
    runs in 1927. This record-breaker would remain a
    record itself until 1961, when Roger Eugene Maris
    (1934 - 85) hit 61 home runs. The record has
    since then been broken by Sammy Sosa of the
    Chicago Cubs with 66 homers in 1998 and Mark
    McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals with 70 in the
    same year.

Flappers In the 1920s, a new woman was born. She
smoked, drank, danced, and voted. She cut her
hair, wore make-up, and went to petting parties.
She was giddy and took risks. She was a flapper.

DANCE MARATHONS    Mostly every weekend couples
would spree to go and dance the night away.  They
would dance to the Charleston, and the Fox-trot. 
The swing dance was also popular in the 1920's. 
The longest dance record recorded was 3 weeks of
dancing.
