Title: Equipment Maintenance

1
Equipment Maintenance
2
Importance of Equipment Maintenance
  • The longer equipment replacement cycle, the more
important maintenance becomes since frequency and
level of services and repairs increase
  • Technology improvements have reduced some
repair/replacement but the complexity of the work
    has increased
  • Many companies outsource the complex electronic
    work

3
Different Levels of Maintenance
  • 1st-wash, fuel, inspect safety items-brake
    adjustment, lights, tire air pressure,etc.
  • 2nd-oil change, tire wheel replacement, minor
    repairs and adjustments
  • 3rd-Repairs and replacement of electrical
    systems, air conditioning, engine rebuilds,
    clutches, steering

4
Maintenance Intervals
  • End of trip-visual inspection of safety items
    brakes, tires, suspension, fifth wheel-grease
  • 8000 mile-grease steering and suspension points
    more thorough safety inspection
  • 25,000 to 30,000 miles intervals-oil change
  • Annual D.O.T.-pull wheels off and check bearings,
brake chambers, and inspect D.O.T. safety items

5
D.O.T. Maintenance Requirements
  • tire tread depths
  • brake adjustments within allowable tolerances
  • correct driver inspection deficiencies
  • correct DOT roadside inspection deficiencies
  • maintain equip. maintenance records for three
yrs., unless involvement in fatal accident-life

6
Equipment Breakdowns
  • Highest frequency items- 1tires, frayed air
lines-loss of air pressure, a/c, electronic
    sensors
  • Use satellite terminals where possible, then
    truck-stops, OEM shops, repair garages
  • Time is the most important factor, then cost
  • Measure frequency of breakdowns and the total
    time down

7
Manufacturer Involvement
  • Training your maintenance personnel
  • Provide training materials and equipment updates
  • Certify your technicians to comply with DOT and
    OSHA requirements
  • Warranty work and warranty recovery
  • Assistance in developing equipment specifications

8
Shop Technology
  • Parts listings put on c.d.s and accessed from
    CRTs at work stations
  • All parts manuals on c.d.s or hard drives
  • Sensors in engines and drive train do diagnostics
  • Electronic sensors in reefers allow units to
    cycle through cooling and defrost
