• No American school children have been killed in
  fires at school but dozens have been killed by
  students or intruders since 1994.
• Juvenile mass murders are a new phenomena in
  history (Jonesboro, Columbine, Red Lake, Virginia
  Tech. - all occurred in the past 20 years).
• 75 of school shootings were over in 15 minutes.
• School shootings appear to be evolving in
  complexity and sophistication.

• Security efforts should attempt to deter, detect,
  delay, and defeat threats.
• Lock-down drills are now focusing on moving to
  safe locations rather than staying in an
  un-secured location (Chicago Move Model).
• Classrooms should have 2 ways out if possible.
• Rooms should have a way to lock doors from the
  inside or doors should be closed and locked
  during class.

• There has never been a bomb found in a school
  after a threat was made. Bomb threats are
  commonly either 1) harassment or 2) attempts to
  give an outside shooter an opportunity once a
  building is evacuated.

• There is no profile of a school shooter but, of
  the 19 school shootings to date, all had
• Access to guns at home
• A perceived grievance with someone at school
• An obsession with violence
• Made threats beforehand. Few were involved in
  structured, adult supervised activities. 88
  occurred in December May. 88 were in rural
  communities. Poor grades, substance abuse, and
  prior misconduct were not commonalities.
