Title: Beef Cattle and the Use of CIDRS

1
Beef Cattle and the Use of CIDRS
  • Emily Barabe
  • Lindsay Imhoff
  • Laurie Rieden
  • Stephanie Rosenheck

2
Client Scenario
  • Our client is a rancher who has signed a contract
to deliver 6 truckloads of calves to a feedlot at
    weaning.
  • He will be paid a premium if he can deliver
animals of approximately the same weaning weight
    and genetics.

3
Client Scenario
  • This rancher has 410 cows. The herd is made up of
both cycling and anestrus suckling cows.
  • He wants to use the Eazi-Breed cattle insert
    along with prostaglandin
  • He does not have enough bulls to breed all of the
cows in a short time period, so he must use A.I.

4
Treatment Regime
  • Day 0 Insert CIDR
  • Day 6-7 Give lutalyse
  • Day 7 Remove CIDR
  • Day 8-11 Breed animal on observed estrus or
timed A.I. (48-54 hours after removal of CIDR)

5
Drugs Involved
  • CIDR Progesterone
  • Targets uterine endometrium, hypothalamus
  • Involved in steroid hormone action, therefore
progesterone diffuses across the cell membrane
and gets into the nucleus and causes a change in
    DNA synthesis.
  • Involved in a negative feedback mechanism which
inhibits GnRH surge (prevents ovulation by
    maintaining the corpus luteum)

6
Drugs Involved
  • Lutalyse Prostaglandin 2 alpha
  • - targets the corpus luteum
  • - fatty acid that acts via a Ca2 2nd
messenger system that will eventually increase
    the intracellular concentration of Calcium
  • - will cause luteolysis therefore the current
follicular wave will ovulate, estrogen from this
follicular wave will also induce estrus

7
Effectiveness
  • Can use on cycling and anestrous beef cows and
    cycling beef heifers
  • Has lower success rate in anestrous cows
  • Not for use in beef cows less than 20 days
    postpartum

8
Determining Success
  • Palpate or ultrasound animals for CL before
    starting
  • Pregnancy Check (ultrasound at day 28 or palpate
    after day 35)
  • Watch for heats following CIDR removal

9
Labor
  • Increased labor due to
  • A.I. breeding
  • Inserting CIDR
  • Removing CIDR and injection
  • Heat detection
  • Additional help needed during calving period
