BEACH BAR BROKEN On the 9th of February, at 2
P.M at night a government officer from Mtwara
Council accompanied by police men and labourers
demolished the bar / restaurant known as Jambo
Beach. A truck equipped with a crane and 10
men with sledge hammers came in the middle of the
night and wrecked everything, even the porcelain
toilet!. Explained the bar owners wife. The
bar was demolished because it was apparently a
hazard to the environment. However, Sele
Mustapha, the owner, rejects this claim saying
that, The environment had nothing to do with
it! Mr. Mustapha claims that he had the full
permission of the Mikindani Local Council plus he
claims to have been issued with a business
licence. Mr. Mustapha suggested that spite and
jealousy were the real reasons behind the
demolition. Two weeks before, the owners of Jambo
Beach were given the ultimatum from Mtwara
Council demolish the bar before the 9th of Feb,
or the council will demolish it at a cost. Mr.
Mustapha chose not to demolish the bar himself
and has still yet to hear from the council about
having to pay.
GOATS WILL BE PROSECUTED A new law has been
introduced in Mikindanis Boma ward that states
that any goat caught in someones vegetable
garden can be apprehended and brought to the
wards Executive Office by the owner of the
garden. The law states that the goat will only be
returned to its owner after the sum of 5,000
shillings is paid to the Ward Executive
Officer. Justine Mkwara, Bomas Ward Executive
Officer explains that the new law has deterred
many goat owners from letting their animals roam
freely. A good number of animals have been
brought to me, he said. However, he continued,
This problem of wandering goats eating the
produce of others gardens is not an easy problem
to solve because many people have animals but
they dont have their own land to graze them on.
