What is to be monitored
  • ? Instantaneous radiation levels
  • ? at millisecond time scales
  • ? at seconds time scale
  • ? at minutes time scale
  • ? at days/months/years time scale
  • ? Sensitivity
  • ? rad/hour (long term)
  • ? rad/second (short term/bursts)

Part I a la CDF
  • CDF already has a monitor and beam abort system
  • ? Beam Loss Monitors (BLMs)
  • ? 1 Atm. Ar filled glass/Al tubes
  • Current ? Radiation / low sensitivity
  • ? TLDs infrequent access at long intervals
  • Used to gauge the BLMs a posteriori
  • Will use same system in RUN II, but at larger z
    distance

Part I CDF?DØ
  • BLM proven to be reliable, Beams division trusts
them use them also for DØ
  • Bulky use at large z distance, 4 on each side of

I.P.

Part II from OPAL
  • All 4 LEP experiments have good radiation
monitoring and beam abort systems, the OPAL
system is used as inspiration for DØ.
  • Principle 0.7x0.7 cm2 Si diode current ?
    radiation
  • Two gain ranges (a la OPAL) to accommodate high
    sensitivity fast measurement and lower
    sensitivity long term integral measurement
  • Maintain fast signals to the external electronics

  • Location of the sensors in DØ
  • F-disk
    H-disk

6 sensors at each location

BLM system Si diodes
Have BLMs at FNAL Have 48 with guard/ 48 without in NL
Install during shutdown in September Some sensors to be shipped next week from NL
Cables on order arrive in next two weeks ?same
HV use DØ system Needs to be understood
DAQ/readout through BD system feedback to DØ for monitoring Prototype readout exist in NL, not at FNAL yet. Shipped in coming weeks.
Mounts to be decided next week ? same
Ready for commissioning run Install during shutdown readout may not be available at start ( outside hall)
People working on this at FNAL D.Wijngaarden,
S.Duensing (Nijmegen) K. Gounder (BD)
