Construction of the Pennsylvania State House,
which came to be known as Independence Hall,
began in 1732. It was a symbol of the nation to
come. At the time it was the most ambitious
public building in the thirteen colonies.

Assembly Room

• The Assembly Room is where the Declaration of
  Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776. and
  where the U. S. Constitution was drafted in 1787.

Liberty Bell

• The old State House bell was first called the
  "Liberty Bell" by a group trying to outlaw
  slavery. These abolitionists remembered the words
  on the bell and, in the 1830s, adopted it as a
  symbol of their cause.
