Title: What is EISCAT3D

1
(What is EISCAT-3D?)
Beth ydy EISCAT-3D?
  • Derek McKay Ivan Finch, RAL
  • MIST 10-13 Ebrill 2006

2
The Project
  • Design study only
  • EU Framework 6
  • No money (yet) for construction
  • May 2005, four years duration
  • Participants EISCAT, UiT, LTU, RAL
  • Still in the early stages

3
Where?
  • Four Rx-only sites (Examples shown here)
  • One dual-Tx/Rx site (Tromsø)
  • N-S and E-W lines
  • Uniform spacing
  • 150 and300 km

4
Transmitter site
  • Single Transmitted beam from Tromsø
  • Transmit frequency 215 MHz
  • Pulse-coding (same as now)
  • VHF (with phase control) as the possible test
bed for the transmitter, or even the final
    transmitter
  • Tromsø will act as central control/archive

5
Receiver sites
  • Remotely operated no local staff!
  • Receiver frequency range 200-230 MHz(wide
    enough to see plasma lines)
  • Phased arrays
  • 1500 elements each
  • 3000m2 collecting areas (approx. 35m dish)
  • sloped sites
  • IPS not possible due to 30 off-bore limitation

6
Receiver sites
  • 5-10 electronically steered beams per site
  • Near and far receiver sites (150, 300km),
    selected for the sky view
  • near sites are too close for good tri-statics
    at high altitudes
  • far sites cant see low altitude
  • Note that Tx site also has receive ability

7
Interferometry
  • Tromsø will have interferometric capability
  • 7 small elements
  • Coherence threshhold driven observing

8
What do we get
  • Multiple beams, therefore multiple tri-static
    measurements along the Tx beam
  • One Rx-beam reserved for continual calibration
  • 30km to 2000km altitudes
  • Range resolution down to 30m
  • You get the current package of analysed data
params Ne, Ti, Te, n, comp, vi

9
Plans
  • Design work in progress
  • Questionnaire sent out
  • Second call for user community input mid-2006
  • At the conclusion of the design study, a proposal
    for construction will be made
  • Will lead to a FP7 bid
