Title: CNL 09 Overview

2An Invitation to a Wonderful Opportunity
- I would like to cordially invite you to
participate in Chong Hwa Australias training and
development camp, the 2009 Camp-No Limits hosted
by the Western Australian Institute of Taekwon-do
(WAIT). We look forward to your fully active
participation in this event however, please note
some important issues so that you will get the
most out of this event. - These are the guiding principles that Camp-No
Limits operates under
- Come prepared. Be sure that when you arrive at
Camp No Limits you are physically and
technically capable for your rank. This is
predominantly a training camp rather than a
learning camp. It is to develop your expertise
further than is practical in normal weekly
classes. To get the most from the camp, come in
the best condition you can, so we can start at
your regular training high point and progress
forward from there. Without exception,
practitioners that have previously been to CNL
have all remarked on how they reach a new level
of capability. Many also find it a great platform
to kick-start a new heightened momentum
throughout their regular training, for months
following CNL.
- Be aware. Read all the information provided
carefully. It was written for a distinct reason
and it will be expected that you know it for
camp.
- Camp No Limits aims to develop your current level
only. The camps main goal is to take the current
practitioner you are and make you more proficient
given your current rank, age, experience and
skill sets. For example, if you are a yellow
belt, the aim is to make you the best yellow belt
practitioner you can be, not to increase your
skills to that of a black belt. You will be
working within your current capacity.
- Your self development is paramount. Long term
training in the martial arts is guided by one
underlying understanding your self development
will require time in self reflection coupled with
self discipline. In todays world, time purely
for self reflection can be a rare thing. The camp
provides considerable time for you to enjoy both
the company of fellow practitioners and for your
own personal reflection.
- Pace yourself. Its normal to be over-zealous
about a training opportunity like this, but I
strongly recommend balancing your enthusiasm over
the entire length of the camp. Each day has new
challenges so dont push it so hard that you are
incapable of participation on subsequent days.
I feel honoured and excited to be able to provide
this camp to you and hope you enjoy this
opportunity to develop yourself as a Taekwon-Do
practitioner. Yours in Taekwon-Do, Alan
Stewart Chief Instructor Western Australian
Institute of Taekwon-Do
3Camp Overview
- CNL 09 consists of the following major elements
- 30 Training Classes - Over the course of the
camp, practitioners will have 30 training
sessions. These will vary in intensity and
function including the fitness tests, self
defence, sparring, step sparring, grappling and
patterns. Unlike regular classes during everyday
training, the camp provides the opportunity for
each class to completely focus on the development
of one exercise / element (ie 2 step sparring)
giving practitioners a fantastic opportunity to
refine and improve their skills in a way not
available in normal club training.
- 3 Workshop / Seminars - Using a mixture of
multimedia, handouts and documented materials,
these seminars are presented by a range of
international instructors and are sit down
sessions focusing on the development of your TKD
knowledge in topics immediately relevant to
Taekwon-Do. They can also involve workshop styled
elements including group work and case studies.
- Team Activities - In coordination with a
leadership development program, a range of
exciting team challenges will run throughout the
camp. These complimentary programs ran very
successfully on the previous camp and have been
expanded and improved to involve more mentorship
and camaraderie. The challenges will certainly
bring with them a few surprises. Please note
with only a limited number of places,
practitioners wishing to be involved in the
leadership program, must complete the additional
leadership section on their application.
- Gup Grading - Towards the conclusion of the camp,
a gup grading will be held, allowing
practitioners the opportunity to seek promotion
to a higher gup rank. Please note a range of
conditions apply, and practitioners should read
these conditions carefully prior to nominating to
grade at CNL 09.
- Dan Grading - A dan test will also be
administered for Dan practitioners. Please note
that a range of conditions apply, and
practitioners should read these conditions
carefully prior to nominating to grade at CNL 09.
- Social Party - As with previous camps, a party
will be held for all participants as well as all
family and friends who would like to come along
for the evening, get a first hand look at CNL 09
and join in the fun!
4Camp Location
- Ern Halliday Recreation Camp
- Whitfords Avenue,
- HILLARYS WA 6025
- Tel (08) 9401 2419
Ern Halliday is an exciting camp complex located
a stone's throw from the beach in Perth's
northern suburbs. We like to call it our
sanctuary in the suburbs because it is surrounded
by 28 hectares of natural bus.
The Ern Halliday Recreation Camp is more than a
physical site available for group bookings. It is
a special place where Western Australians of all
ages can share in unique activities in an
exceptional environment. Even though you're still
in the metropolitan area, you feel like you're a
long way from the rat race.

6Frequently Asked Questions
- General
- Can Non-Martial Arts people come to the Camp?
Yes, they can. Parents are certainly invited and
encouraged to attend. CNL 06 provided a
wonderful opportunity for parents to spend time
with their children, with several opting to
kick-start their TKD training through this
event and kick start their own fitness
development. Ern Halliday also has a range of
other activities that people can undertake. As
organisers we encourage parents to come and spend
some time as a family, and several elements have
been designed to involve non-practitioners in the
daily activities of the Camp. The Camp manual has
further details or contact Mr Stewart.
What sort of sleeping arrangements are there?
The campsite provides bunk room sleeping
facilities which will be allocated. Participants
need to bring a pillow and a sheet/sleeping bag.
Group leaders and camp instructors are provided
separate sleeping quarters adjacent to other
practitioners, where possible.
Is child supervision provided?
WAIT Instructors and group leaders (which any
adult can apply to be) provide the supervision of
children. The camp is run on a set of rules
outlined in the Camp Manual to ensure that
welfare of all participants at all times. For
children under 13yrs, a specified guardian must
be nominated and included on the application form
(see Application Form Guardian Approval).
Will I be required to do anything else but train,
eat, learn and rest?
Everyone on the camp shoulders the responsibility
to share in the minor chores and maintenance of
the training facilities. There are also minor
requirements based on requirements of the
campsites policies. The Camp Manual will outline
these in detail and a full Camp Orientation is
provided for all practitioners first arrive on
site.
I have special dietary requirements. What can be
arranged for me?
CNL 09 has all five meals (Breakfast, Morning
Tea, Lunch, Afternoon Tea and Dinner) catered
for, and the caterers can make adjustments for
people with specific requirements with sufficient
notice. Please contact Mr Stewart for further
clarification.
Im a 4th Degree. Will I get a chance to train at
my level?
Absolutely. In fact, CNL was inspired by an
emerging need for our senior members to have a
focused and dedicated training event that allows
them to maintain and refine their advanced
skills ie whilst youll train Chon Gi daily,
youll also be training Moon Moo just as often.
7Frequently Asked Questions (Cont)
- Fitness Test
- Just how fit do I need to be?
Ideally, before the camp begins you should aim to
be capable of 120 of the fitness requirements
for your rank and age. This should ensure that
you will be fit enough to meet all the daily
challenges that come with this training and
development camp. Of course, if you cant achieve
this you will certainly still benefit greatly
from this camp but we, as the organisers, have a
responsibility to ensure that you pace yourself
and dont cause yourself an injury. PLEASE NOTE
The fitness requirements are not overtly
difficult and anyone with average health and
fitness should be able to prepare easily for the
camps fitness tests in less than 2 months with
nothing more than a reasonable training schedule
of exercise 3 times per week. A recommended
training regime for the three months prior to the
camp is provided in the Camp Manual. Also there
is a reminder of the camp requirements listed on
the Camp Poster.
Why am I required to undertake a fitness test
each day?
This is due to our responsibility for your health
and wellbeing. It will help gauge how well your
body is coping with the training each day and
help us in ensuring you dont over-exert yourself
resulting in an injury. Our goal is to ensure all
participants can get the most out of this
training event.
What is a beep test?
The 20m Shuttle Run Test, more commonly called
the beep test is a test of fitness and
endurance used by many sporting, government and
military organisations worldwide to measure
stamina and general fitness. Simply put, you run
between two points 20metres apart keeping pace
with a toned beep which periodically gets faster.
There are several versions of the beep test but
we will be using the Australian Defence Forces
version. For some details, check the Camp
Preparation Manual or go to Australian Defence
Forces.
Can I fail a part of the fitness test and still
do all the sessions during a day?
Yes, you can fail one component of the fitness
test before any restrictions on your class
training activities occur.
What happens if I dont pass the fitness test?
There are between 3 and 6 training sessions and 1
seminar each day of Camp-No Limits. For your
personal health, if you cannot complete the
fitness test on a particular morning you will be
restricted to a limited number of sessions on
that day, which allow you more rest and recovery
for the next day of the camp. You will still be
required to attend every session though to ensure
you dont miss anything and you will assist the
instructor in providing the class for the other
practitioners.
8Frequently Asked Questions (Cont)
- Activities
- How much spare time do I have on the camp?
That is really up to yourself. There are seminars
which are completely optional and if you choose
not to attend these you will have ample hours
each day to go swimming, catch up with your camp
friends, undertake some specific training, do
school studies or simply relax. If you choose to
undertake all facets of training and development
provided on the camp though, you will only have a
few hours spare each day spread over the course
of the day and evening.
What can I do in my spare time?
Ern Halliday is a well appointed group
accommodation facility, situated in expansive 28
hectare grounds with large tracts of natural
bushland, blending with wide open playing fields
and access to one of Perths most stunning
beaches. A multitude of activities can be
available including beach volleyball, swimming,
coastal and marine education, abseiling, flying
fox, archery, surf skis, as well as a range of
surf life saving games and activities, as well as
indoor activities (conditions apply for certain
activities). Also as part of the camps program,
there will be a talent show which everyone
participates in for some fun and relaxation.
Apart from that, some preparation is advisable
for each of the workshops to maximise your time
at camp, and for students, there is always school
studies!
