Ant
An ants life expectancy is 45-60 days. Ants use
their antennae not only for touch, but also for
smell. Ants are clean insects. Some worker ants
are given the job of taking the rubbish from the
nest and putting it outside in a special dump.
8
Fly
Flies can be found in most places in the
world. The mouth parts of an adult fly are
designed either for sucking and sponging or
piercing and sucking. No adult fly can chew its
food. Many diseases such as Malaria and Yellow
Fever are transmitted by flies.
9
Grasshopper
Grasshoppers can be very destructive to
vegetation by eating the leaves. The male
sings during the day by rubbing the inner surface
of the hind femur (leg) against the lower edge
of the front wing. Grasshoppers detect sounds
using a membrane called a tympanum on each
side of the first abdominal segment.
10
Mosquito
Mosquitoes are found all over the world. The
female needs blood to lay eggs and produce more
mosquitoes. She has a special part of her
mouth that she uses to suck blood, and her saliva
thins the blood so she can drink it. It is the
mosquitos saliva that makes the bites itch.
11
Dragonfly
Dragonflies have clear, glassy wings which have a
mass of cross veins giving them the
appearance of being a mesh. Dragonflies are
excellent fliers and can fly at speeds up to 30
miles per hour. They have exceptionally good
eyesight and have been known to respond to
stimuli from more then 40 feet away.
12
Beetle
Beetles are the largest single order of
insects. They range in size from .25mm to over
170mm long, and comprise both the largest and
very nearly the smallest insects in the world.
13
Ladybug
The Ladybug is one of the most beneficial insects
in the beetle family because it feeds on pest
insects like aphids. Ladybugs chew their food
from side to side. A female will lay more
than 1000 eggs in her lifetime. Ladybugs
produce a chemical that smells and tastes
terrible so that birds and other predators will
not eat them.
14
Bee
Bees have feather-like hairs on their bodies that
help in collecting pollen. Bees help to
pollinate many plants. They feed their larvae on
honey which is a mixture of pollen and nectar
that is collected from flowers. Many bees are
social insects which means the queen bee
produces eggs and the worker bees are in
charge of enlarging the nest, collecting and
storing food, and caring for the larvae.
15
Butterfly
A butterflys mouth has a sucking tube that curls
up in a spiral under the head when not in use.
Its primary food source is nectar from flowers.
The adult butterflys wings are covered with
beautiful scales, and the body is covered with
tiny sensory hairs. This makes the butterfly good
at flying. Butterflies do no have the ability to
detect sound.
