5Johannesburg Seminar
- Students gain an orientation to the semester and
learn about the historical impacts of white,
minority rule in South Africa and Namibia.
- Students visit with local activists, schools,
politicians and religious leaders. - Students also participate on a homestay in
Soweto, Johannesburg's former black township.
6Johannesburg Seminar
- Activities Include
- Visit to Museums
- A Homestay in the former black township, Soweto
- Speakers from the African National Congress, as
well as speakers from grass roots political
organizations - An exchange with a local high school
7Windhoek, Namibia
- While in Namibia, students are based in Windhoek
- Namibias capital city.
Windhoek is Namibias largest city and represents
the countrys ethnic diversity. Legacies of
German and South African rule can still be seen
throughout Windhoek.
8Center for Global Education House
- Students study live in the CGE House,
- located near downtown Windhoek
Students share modest, yet comfortable living
arrangements.
9Semester Course Offerings
- While in Namibia you have the option of enrolling
in courses focusing on - Politics in Southern Africa,

10Experiential Learning
- Students with the Head of the Evangelical
Lutheran Church - Community workers of a local community-based
organization - Women working at a bread bakery income generation
project
Youll meet and interact with a variety of
different individuals and organizations to
complement your class-based learning
11Community Engagement
In addition to interning with a local
organizations, many students volunteer with local
community organizations and participate in local
activities.
12Urban Homestays
- While taking courses, students will stay with
local families for a 10 day urban homestay.
Students learn about Namibian culture, build
relationships and share about their own
upbringing while on homestays
13Living and Learning Community
- Part of the CGE experience is also the tight-knit
community of students. Students take classes and
experience Namibia with the comforts of fellow
students.

Students explore Namibias cultural and
geographic diversity on a number of CGE sponsored
travel seminars.
15Swakopmund
- A vacation destination in Namibia, Swakopmund
provides a stark contrast of Namibias wealth and
poverty.
16Northern Namibia
Students also travel to Ondangwa to learn more
about the liberation struggle and visit the
nations most densely populated regions.

17Etosha National Park
18Rural Homestays
Students experience rural living and build
relationships with families on a 6-day rural
homestay.
19- While on rural homestays, students are provided
with food and water and housed in a familys home.
20Independent Travel
- Near the middle of the semester, students can
further explore Namibia or Southern Africa on a 1
week break.

21Integrative Projects
- To close-off the semester, students engage in
creative research to present and develop an
integrative project that ties together their
learning throughout the semester.
22Cape Town Travel Seminar
Students end their semester with a travel seminar
to Cape Town. Students explore the unique
identity of the Western Cape, learn from
community activists, visit Robben Island and
enjoy Cape Towns natural beauty.
23Summer Internship Program Social Change and
Development in Southern Africa
- Two courses for summer study are available
- Interdisciplinary Development course and
- Internship Seminar, which includes class sessions
and a field placements. - 10 weeks (June-August)
24- Students are largely focused on their
internships, but also participate in home stays
and travel seminars.
Placements include but are not limited to working
within the fields of education, womens issues,
health, economics, youth work, human rights,
tourism, social work. Unique placements can be
arranged based on a students interests and
skills.
